unpledge and pledge or defect?

So im about to unpledge federation and pledge empire. I notice u can unpledge or defect. Is one way better then the other, or do they give the same results.

Un-pledge, You defect and then they hunt you down and kill you.

If you defect, you keep half your merits though. So if you have a lot and think you can take the heat of being hunted, defect.
