Newcomer / Intro Unrequested Mission

I've just jumped into a star system where an unidentified signal was highlighted in blue. I went to it and scooped up, amongst other things, a black box. As soon as I did, I got a message from a mysterious "Thomas" of Taueret Gold Society saying the mission was complete and to deliver the black box.
Thing is, I never accepted any such mission!
I then jumped to Taueret and docked at the nearest spaceport there and sold the black box to the Search and Rescue Contact as I couldn't find any "Thomas".
So, my question is, how did I get an unasked for mission, and what should I have done?

Unrequested missions do come in from time to time. I don’t know exactly what triggers them. They usually pop up in your comms panel that you can accept or decline, or you get a covas verbal report that there’s a mission location in the current system. These can be found via the blue mission locations in the nav panel. I usually skip them because they are simplistic and have very low rewards, however since the latest update, mission rewards have been increased, so I don’t know if they pay any higher these days.

Strangely enough, I later did accept another (totally unrelated) mission to salvage a black box as it was on my route. However, despite covas telling me I'd arrived at a mission destination, when I did arrive at the relevant star system, there was no sign of any blue mission location in the nav panel. Even going to the nav beacon there didn't reveal any location. There was only one unidentified signal in the system and that wasn't the mission (it was, however, the location of more imperial shielding than I had capacity for!).
This is the umpteenth time that a mission has been glitched, so I'm not going to bother with them any more.

Current state of missions, I wouldn't make that assumption. Nav beacon is the equivalent of a full scan
Agreed. However, I did try an FSS scan anyway, just in case. Still nothing. I've left that system, logged off and will try logging on and returning to the system later today (20 hrs left to complete the mission).
If still no luck, I'll just abort the mission. I have had this happen before, and abandoning the mission didn't cost me anything, so was definitely a glitch. We'll see what happens this time!

You have to FSS scan to find the mission-related USS. It's not glitched; you're just dong it wrong.
You're partially wrong here. Scanning the beacon is like doing a full FSS scan. If it does not reveal the mission location, it is gitched.

OP, sometimes the mission target location is not known until you spend some time orbiting a body. All i can think of is that nav beacon scan highlighted a body as current mission target, but you have the planets switched off in the nav panel filter list.

Not sure about the triggers, but you should always ignore these idiocies.
Delete from messages and move on.
Whenever someone is saying people "should" play the game in a specific way, the best thing they can do is to do completely opposite.

Ignore anyone who tells you to play the game in a specific way and play your own, OP. Playing your own way is the only true correct way to play Elite.

@rootsrat hmmm, that's a possibility 🤔 When I log on again, I'll get my srv hanger refitted and head on over there again and take a look 👍
