Unstable tracking on Vive - Here's a tip

Hi all,

Last night while bopping around I kept having my cockpit momentarily dip to one side then recover quickly. This has been happening since I had the Vive and is quite disorienting and annoying. I played around with it last night and found it only happened when my head was in a specific orientation.

Using my fingers to cover parts of the Vive I found it was being caused by the reflective plastic on my Logitech wireless headset. If I cover that area with my fingers, the dip never happens. The IR sensors on the HMD must have been reflected in the shiny plastic, causing the momentary dip when seen by the base stations.

I took some surgical tape, covered the front side of the headset and the problem disappeared. After an hour of play it has been stable and no dips.

Hope this helps someone else.

Time to dock and finally change that y right thruster?

Good you found the problem - props for the ghetto fix.

I'll bet a few jittery tracking issues are due to mirrors/pictures/shinysurfaces mucking with the lasers and ending up with multiple overlaps for the Vive to cope with.

If you happen to have a Leap Motion unit, then there is an option to see what the Leap Motion camera is seeing and you can actually see the lighthouse units flashing brightly. It must use the same frequency. Anyway, you can use it to find reflective spots in the room.
