This comes topic comes up every once in a while and I thought I'd post a few things to give folks hope (because, let's face it, it's pretty cool to see your CMDR name attached to a star, even if it isn't your main motivation for getting out in the deep).
I was returning from a passenger mission to TrA X-1, taking as direct a route as possible, and I got to this system:
Swoilz ZM-W c4-16
only 576 light years from Sol, untagged (until now):

In my engineered Asp Explorer (when I've removed the passenger cabin), that's right around 11 jumps!
Anyway, this is meant to encourage new explorers. There are plenty of reasons beyond getting your name out there, but getting your name out there is pretty nice.
