Until we get better mechanics for material gathering...

Would FDEV please remove degraded emissions from deep space to make finding G5 materials less of a chore?
Please!

I almost forgot, find an anarchy system, look for a convoy uss (grade 3 is the best) it usually spawns a couple of anacondas and a type 9. You can get a few different materials as well as the ones you're looking for

I used the material traders for the first time today and must say: Wow. What's the whine about the grind?
Read about the bad exchange rates and didn't bother but man, if you just hoard everything you always have materials to trade.
On many trips i decide to drop in every uss and just chill while the limpets do their thing. Everything is good.

Only thing I wish is that it wouldn't necessary to lock on to the uss to see what type it is. Would be so nice if one could scan it just by heading towards it a few seconds.

Also, I wouldn't mind more meaningless uss's to give more life to populated systems. I like fluff :)

It makes me laugh how many people defend the big steaming pile of **** that is High Grade Signal Source gameplay. No matter which way you do it, it's boring as hell. Wasn't it meant to be a placeholder for future improvements anyway?

I'm not saying in any way that collecting mats is a joy. What I meant was it's not worse than any other power creep mechanics I've encountered in mmo's.
I'd actually prefer if the stats were set in stone and one maybe could get unique mods/arms/kitparts/decals/clothes as mission and rank awards.
Maxing is a stressful bore but I know some see it as a purpose.
But after actually using the traders I might be bothered to go full on engineered. It's not that bad. Although if I felt it was a necessity Elite would not be my game.
Which it is.
Engineering is just something to do from time to time. If I tried to max out at once I would propably be doing some childish crying here too.

I am currently looking for proto radiolic alloys and all I find are proto heat radiators. Which at an exchange rate of 6:1 is pointless trading.

I'll swap you. I was looking for Radiators and found nothing but Alloys. :)

I don't mind the HGE hunting, it's the getting kicked in the nuts after you find the HGE that I really don't like. They need to separate the mats so none share a state.

I wouldn't hold your breath on either part - the mechanics are hugely improved compared to 2.1-2.4. It is arguably now far too easy - and therefore the logical next improvement is that all components are to be bought already Max G5'd...

I think what they actually meant was "more fun" or "less boring".

Data is the worst bottleneck IMO.

Least with HGE stuff you can just cruise around until you gather what you need.
In a "good" HGE system, you can find a HGE at least once every couple of minutes.
Even in a less successful system, you'll get a HGE every 5 minutes.
1 HGE gives you 3-5 drops or 9-15 mat's.
You're collecting at least two mat's per minute searching for HGEs.

Compare that to what's required to collect top-tier data, which mostly comes from base-runs or missions.
If you're getting it from missions you have to rank-up with a faction until you start getting the right sort of missions.
Then you get 1 or 2 missions on the board which supply you with 3-5 mat's, take around 30 minutes to complete and potentially incur fines/bounties which need to be cleared.
And then there's base-runs which (IIRC) now provide one mat', take around 10 minutes and almost certainly incur fines/bounties in the process.
Looking for G5 data, you'll be lucky to pick up 1 mat for every 10 minutes you're playing.

Which makes it 20 times more painful to collect than stuff from HGEs.

I think all of it is just bad gameplay but the base runs are much much easier than they used to be. They fixed the 1 mat per drop thing, it's 3 mats again. But more importantly you can now just relog to keep resetting the same base. It's as monotonous and boring as ever but it goes much quicker now. You can just spend a couple hours at a base and then use the material trader for all your data needs. Still brainless gameplay but at least it's quick.
