"Unusual" Friend Request

So a few times now over the past couple of months I've started up the game to see a Friend request in my inbox. When I scroll through the history of all the players I've instanced with these particular players are never listed. Maybe they got my Cmdr name from my Forum posts or YT videos, but then they could just PM me or comment on YT.

If this were email I'd say it was phishing, but in any case it's strange.

I recently got a friend request from a commander when at a CG. i asked if i knew him and he made some excuse about him being a commander amoung commanders and he likes to follow the trends of player movement around the galaxy for personal interest.

A google search revealed this commander to be a member of 'The Code' and an avid pirate and part time griefer (his youtube channel was most enlightening).

But ive had dozens of requests like this from random commanders who are just... curious.. at CG's...

You can search and send friend request to anyone in the menu, everyone in the player group I'm in is on my list although I've actually met less than half of them. I usually notice new members as a result of the subsequent friend requests.

But the easiest way to find a player for assassination is a "friend" passing on location details. I got some surprise non group requests after I apparently got KOS listed for starting a thread about the block function. Have you annoyed anyone ?.

You have groupies.

I once had a dude tell me we had met in multicrew doing some Piracy. At that time I had not done any multicrew.
I just figured it was someone's Alt account keeping tabs on me. I've also got a few unusual named friends on my list I am sure I haven't accepted. I wondered if they were people who had changed names? I think that is a thing.

Same thing here.

Nothing personal but unless I've communicated with somebody beforehand, I just delete random friend requests without a 2nd thought.

This is one of the reasons I'd really like better friend management, especially the ability to tag or group players under different headings (e.g. "RL Friends", "Fuel Rats", "Buckyballers", "Random encounters", "Unsolicted fr's", etc). I'd like to give random fr's the benefit of the doubt ... but I'd also like to keep an eye on them!

Thats why I use seperate cmdr/forum names. If you never saw me in-game, and didnt send me a PM, I wont have you in my list.

OP. Some people like to send out friend requests willy nilly. Lots of reasons why. I don't befriend anyone I've not had a conversation with.

I haven't had any friend requests out of the blue, they are usually after I've just been in contact with them somewhere, like the alien structures.

What I did find strange was that I had a request to join my private group that I set up to test between my alt Cmdr and my main Cmdr.

If someone is your friend they can see your position on the game map.

This.

Maybe it's just paranoia but, whenever I get a random friend request, I just assume that somebody's seen me flying my Cutter or my Corvette and is looking for an opportunity to gather up a couple of their buddies and come looking for some pew-pew.

Not really sure what legitimate reason anybody might have for sending a friend request to somebody who they've never communicated with in any way.

Fairly sure I've had a few simply because I've not immediately opened fire on someone, and simply sent them a cheery 'o7' .

Very often if beaten by another player I will send a friend request, only really because I want to message them.

It's kinda silly that we can't just direct message players in our history unless they're in the same instance or befriended.

Would be nice if we could do that.

I got a friend request at a CG, thought, well that was nice, went to nav beacon to do some bounty hunting, saw him went across and he targeted me and blasted me out the sky, cost me 5.3 mill in credits. I wasn't ready, no speech or whatever. I have his name written down somewhere taught me a lesson.

The new commander contact history is definitely allowing for commanders to easily send out lots of friend requests since it lists all the commanders you've recently been near (even if you didn't scan them). That's probably the reason for the uptick.
