History:
She bought a sidewinder for herself after saving for several years to leave her backwoods planet and constant unrewarding planetary work. She had been to many planets already, a freelancer by trade, doing whatever work needed doing on whatever planet needed workers, but had never been behind the controls of her own ship. Her first day in space left her thankful for a forgiving station, and for shields.
Once she had managed to get the hang of the controls, and change a few of them to more easily suit her preferences, she made her first jump. She had heard about rich metal deposits in Kremainn and was eager to make her start. she had never intended to take a life, and only equipped a weapon for defending herself. Yet when she left Wholer terminal and arrived in the metal rich rings around the nearby planet, the very first thing she saw was another pilot attempting to shoot down one of her fellow miners. Horrified by this callous disregard for another life, she brought her ship around and opened fire with her one laser weapon. She could hear the miner thanking her over the radio, but now she found herself in a fight for her own life, swinging her ship around as fast as she could pilot it just to keep the pirate in her cross-hairs. All it would take is one wrong move and her small ship would never withstand the returned fire. Unlike her, the opposed ship was no mere sidewinder. She picked a fight with a Cobra.
Believing her only hope was to make herself seem like more trouble than she was worth, she kept her ship trained on the cobra, using the ships helpful indicators to maintain maneuvers that the Cobra couldn't match, the only advantage she had. Ultimately, the cobra could not be taken down fast enough to avoid return fire, but to her relief, just as she found herself in the cobra's cross-hairs at last, another set of laser pulses pelted into it's side. She'd crippled his shield integrity, and watched with elation as they collapsed and laser fire started to sear his hull. She opened fire anew, hoping to chase him out of the system now that she was not alone in defending the miners. His ship lit up in a sudden flash of light, her shield indicator indicated several small impacts... the space where the cobra once filled was empty once her vision returned. It took her several minutes to realize that she had just killed him, yet she did not feel the guilt or regret she expected to feel. She did not feel the cold chill with the knowledge she had taken another's life.
She glanced to her left and registered a bounty claimer had appeared in her information panel. 16k. A human life was only worth 16k. She smiled. No... A pirates life was only worth 16k. She turned back to wohler station. When she returned to that mining field, her sidewinder no longer carried a mining laser.
A few days Later, she finds herself running her fingertips over the shining new paint-job of a fresh off the line Viper. Her Viper. "Sooo shiny. We'll fix that soon... soon, the scorch-marks will turn you black as the void."
