Hardware & Technical Upcoming 38" ultrawide screen /w 3840x1600 res & 144Hz

Some news from last week about upcoming monitors from the three largest panel manufacturers:
https://www.displayninja.com/new-monitors-in-2018-and-2019/

The following news stands out to me for Elite players:

LG also plans to release additional 27-inch and 31.5-inch Nano IPS displays with a 1440p screen resolution aimed at gamers as well as a 37.5-inch 3840×1600 model with a 144Hz refresh rate, VESA DisplayHDR 1000, 98% DCI-P3, and 2300R curvature in Q1 2019.

In Q3 2018, LG announced a 34-inch 3440×1440 ultra-wide gaming monitor with a 144Hz refresh rate, VESA HDR 400, and 1900R curvature. There will also be a G-SYNC version but without HDR and with a 120Hz max refresh rate.

Nano IPS is LGs equivalent to Samsungs Quantum Dot technology. Also current 3840×1600 ultrawide monitors only come in either 60 or 75 Hz frequency.

Although the article doesn't mention if this 38" screen will come with Freesync or G-sync I'm kinda assuming it will.

Unfortunately the production date for the 37.5" has been pushed back from Q1 to Q2 2019. Source: http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/blog/lg-display-latest-panel-development-plans-october-2018/

Hopefully they will do what they have done with the 34" and make two models one with Freesync the other with G-sync, probably with a noticeable price difference of course :)

Keeping an eye on these as the specs are pretty much my ideal monitor (3840x1600, 100hz+ refresh, adaptive sync with sensible range, 1ms response, decent curve). Just hope they don't suffer from backlight bleed and/or IPS glow.

I had various IPS displays from LG for the longest time, now and I've never had backlight bleed.
Provided mine were always 1080 or 1440p and only sub-30'' monitors, so maybe it's something specific to the bigger ones

Yeah from what I've heard it's worse on the larger panels and especially the curved panels, with some people saying it's down to poor build quality. My Acer 34" curved has pretty bad bleed in the corners but in fairness it's only really noticeable with the lights off and of course ED looks worse because there's a lot of black :) Thankfully the 'IPS glow' is hardly noticeable and other aspects of the monitor make up for it.

LG has now unveiled their new 38 inch 144Hz G-sync screen. No mention of HDR support though. Seeing as all other 38 inch screens on the market is only 60-75 Hz, as I mentioned above, this screen seems like the ideal. As far as I know all G-sync monitors start their range at 30 Hz and as long as the frame rate never drops below 30 Hz you shouldn't notice a difference from low frame rates or high ones (at least according to the experts).

The panel for this screen is Nano IPS which bodes well. Read about it here (also news about their 49 inch mega wide screen with 5120x1440 pixels):

Those massive screens just don't work for me, as awesome as they are. With my desk, and sitting position I wouldn't consider anything above 27. Also, smaller screen - higher pixel density. So there are some advantages too.

God, I want that 38" display. Well, the 49" too, but that might be too much for my budget/apartment/neck.

What kind of card would you need to drive the 38" at native resolution? Would even a 1080ti be sufficient?

1080ti would drive that 38" without breaking a sweat. It has a high refresh rate, but is still not even full 4k. I have the 75hz version of that same LG 38" monitor paired with a 1080ti. I have my frame rate capped at 75 to match the monitor, running Elite with everything ultra/high, it doesn't budge from 75 fps even on planetary surfaces with around 40% gpu usage. I did uncap the frame rate a few times just to see what it could do and pretty much everywhere was 200+ except for planet surfaces and the Gal Map. Only noticed it drop below the 144fps a handful of times, and never below 100.

Thanks! I'm thinking of putting together a build with a 1080ti, and would love a high-refresh monitor. This looks perfect, though I'm pre-frightened by the price. (Copies Siobhan and starts fluttering eye-lashes....)

I know ED is relatively easy on hardware (I'm playing on an iMac well below minimum spec, and it's not bad) - have you tried more taxing games at that resolution?

Thanks again.

Oh boy. In all seriousness this actually looks about as wide as my desk. At the very least even if it wasn't, I'd still have no space for that monster with the speakers and my system actually being on a desk too.

The wide-wide-wide one isn't the 38", that's the 49" 32:9 ratio screen. The 38" 144Hz one though really has me tempted. Doing my (first ever) gaming build at the moment, so if it comes out soon and costs < 2 kidneys, I might go for it. :)
