Ships Upcoming Diamondback ship?

Hello!
Am I right in thinking that the diamondback is a very nice combat-explorer ship???
Also, is its jump range really 24 LY with a combat loadout??????
Thank you,
Maxence

There's some debate on its exploration ability (depends what you require to equip while exploring), but basically, yes. It's a very nimble fighter with a good jump range and really poor cargo hauling potential. And yes, the range can easily hit 24ly with guns, shields etc. fitted. It's a nice alternative to the Viper in a way, a bit slower, a bit weaker shielded, but gains the jump range and some module slots.

I love this ship. Think of it as an extremely beefy cobra without as much versatility. Its no good for trading but its a good and sturdy fighter, a decent explorer, and pretty good for smuggling.

bad shield, bad internals, power distributor is barely enough

the rest is good, but you'd be better with a cobra who cost twice less money

Just do the math. When it's stripped down for a 27LY range jump, the Diamondback is no faster at getting around the bubble than any other stripped down ship with a +20LY range.

Diamondback with 27 LY jump range: 10s witch space loading screen + 16s refuel timer = 26s per jump

FdL with 20LY jump range: 10s witch space loading screen + 10s FSD cooldown = 20s per jump

Cobra with 25LY jump range: 10s witch space loading screen + 10s FSD cooldown = 20s per jump

Jumping 50 LY:

DB: 2 jump = 52s
FdL: 3 jumps = 60s
Cobra: 2 jumps = 40s

Jumping 100 LY:

DB: 4 jumps = 104s
FdL: 5 jumps = 100s
Cobra: 4 jumps = 80s

Jumping 200 LY:
DB: 8 jumps = 208s
FdL: 10 jumps = 200s
Cobra: 8 jumps = 160s

Jumping 1,000 LY

DB: ~37 Jumps = 16 mins
FdL: ~50 Jumps = 17 mins
Cobra: ~40 Jumps = 13 mins

Jumping 25,000 LY (ideally with no hiccups bathroom breaks, brown dwarfs, or scans)

DB: ~7hrs
FdL: ~7hrs
Cobra:~5.5hrs

The more you run into brown dwarfs and other unscoopable stars, the worse it gets for DB because the longer scoop time overruns the FSD cooldown by a larger amount.

So now we see that the DB is no better than the FdL at exploration. Worse actually because you see about 80% of the systems in the same about of time and spend that time fuel scooping instead. The FdL is a notoriously slow ship for getting around the bubble, and FdL pilots have been crying for months for a buff to jump range. Little did they know that they are in fact "combat-explorers" with class 5 fuel scoops.

Funny that you say that. I am right now considering buying an FDL and trying out loadouts, and everything points to including an A4 fuel scoop. The ship may need to scoop often, but it happens very quickly.

The FdL runs a little hot, so using a class 5 fuel scoop might be a better option. I can refuel in the upper corona, start the FSD charge, and aim my ship in <10 seconds. Very efficient. If you work in a Dscan Honk, then it all becomes very economical if you are in a hurry.

I should add, that the FdL is still a horrible exploration ship. The only reason to take it out is because you like a challenge, you are addicted to the Witch Space loading screen, you enjoy staring at the cockpit, or to take super sexy screenshots of the engines. But it is quite literally the worst exploration ship in the game.

I am interested in these claims I periodically hear about how various ships run "hot." Usually this is claimed about the lakon type 6. Did anyone did any hard testing of this?

I don't have any hard numbers, but even with a class 5 fuel scoop, and a class B power supply the FdL can overheat if I'm not very careful with my ranges when scooping. For reference, the scooping time is under 10 seconds. You never encounter that on an Asp, even when the scoop time is much longer than that. You can just hang out by the star almost indefinitely. Can't do that in FdL at all.

They fixed the type 6 overheating in 1.2, but in general Transport ships run quite hot even with A grade power supplies. I did some exploring in a Type 7 just for kicks and it was hard NOT to set off warning lights when charging up the FSD unless I waited a little while after the Fuel scoop disengaged. You don't encounter that even on an FdL.
