Upcycling my MacBook Pro for VR

Hello, I used to play ED on my Mac before that option disintegrated and was always a bit envious of y’all on the VR side of the game.

I just picked up an OculMeta Quest 2. Beat Saber is fun. But it’s got me thinking again about ED…

I’m about to retire my old laptop (MBP 15” 2018, i7 8750H 2.2 GHz, 32Gb RAM). If I put Windows 10 onto it and buy an eGPU, how serviceable would ED VR be? Which GPUs might pair well with the 8750H?

I understand that Odyssey is a whole other kettle of goats compared to Horizons, should I just forget about space legs?

If you have enough GPU horse power it should work ok, you basically want as much as you are prepared to buy some people will swear that a GTX 1070 is enough but I can tell you from my perspective an RTX 3080 is barely enough.

Now is a funny time to be buying a GPU cos although they are coming back into stock and prices are coming back closer to their MSRP you're still living in a world where the MSRP is pretty inflated from the get go and we are something like 3-4months away from the new cycle of GPUs. Not much more to say there unfortunately, you need a decent GPU for VR and the high end models are very expensive with a duopoly of price fixing and shortages. Your best bet is probably to wait for AMD Navi 33 RDNA3 as that according to rumours will give you the same performance as the current flagship models at a mid-tier price.

Regarding Odyssey you can play the usual ship and SRV content like Horizons in VR it seems to run better now but the on-foot Odyssey content is projected mode so its like looking at a big cinema screen in VR. The onfoot gameplay itself isn't that good atm so I wouldn't get too hung up on that just play Horizons until Frontier give Odyssey away which they will probably do at some point so as only having to maintain one game.

If I was in your shoes, OP, I'd stick to horizons, mainly to keep the cost of external graphics cards down but also vr is sweet in horizons. Also consider how much hard drive space you're going to need for bootcamp, windows 10, elite and whatever vr software you go for. Good luck!
