Carriers are Ship Containers , it would change the need to have 'STATIONS , out in the middle of nowhere for no good reason other than too allow ships to dock.

Space travel, building is expensive , permanent settlements ,need a very good reason to exist. If they need too be built ,then Carriers are the means of getting those material to that system.

The Carriers would allow you too dock any of your 3 ships , or a WING , then the pick a destination , and jump there , you can use it for storage refueling and minor repairs
Carriers can refuel at stars , but they have too be BIG a special class of star, of the right mass

The carriers are huge, hence they cant dock at stations , but 'park' outside , but can land on planets bases which have been setup for them, or land close by , if the gravity well allows it !

Only defense a carrier has , is the micro jump, within the system it has just jumped into, Carriers have dual FSD drivers as one is cooling the other can be active. If they carrier is under fire and taking damage , it will micro jump away. with you on-board or not !.

If your out of the Carrier , with one of your ships mining or exploring the system in detail , the Carriers will send you a message of it's current location xyz in space .

Carriers are not fighting craft , they are containers for your ships and a means of storage & transport

Carries can be destroyed , but , it would take a lot of effort , too chase down the Carrier as it continuously micro jumps away , would be very difficult, would take a very determined Wing by that time the Owner ,would have docked and Jumped out of the system.

Carriers are slow . but have incredible long range jumps , far more that any other craft

Carriers can be used a mobile base , in distance systems. Find a low gravity planet land your Carrier , then use your ASP or Miner too jump to other systems too explore , or what ever it is you want to do.

i personally would like a few small turrets on the carrier and maybe a few more internal landing pads (already thought about that over a year ago, my idea was a carrier with 2 large, 2-4 medium and at least 4 small landing pads. didn't think about bringing the squad on board though since i have no idea how it should be handles if a mate docks in the carrier and logs off, where does he spawn when he comes online but the carrier is offline?

but yeah, a large ship to dock a few smaller ships, that can be used as a mobile base, that would be awesome
 
Yep turrets , for defense would be ok , you would then need too land at planets too get material too restock if your way way out
 
since i'm not really a friend of ammo i'd prefer small (or maybe even medium) pulse or burst laser turrets but if there's enough material to find i'd be ok with flaks or something that need ammo

The Carriers are container, to carry ships and cargo storage, it's NOT a fighting ship , if it was too have weapons they would be defensive ,if any at all , its main strategy for survival is too micro jump around the system, away from any threat , that is attacking it
 
of course defensive. that's why i say small or maybe medium turrets (turrets are weaker than their fixed/gimballed versions) and not broadsides with large or huge weapons :p but a single sidewinder or eagle shouldn't be a reason for the carrier to jump imo. and impulse lasers would deal with them easily
