Update crashes during startup. Suggestions?

My son and I have been looking forward to this update. While 1.5.x worked fine, 1.6.x won't even start. I can downgrade to 1.5.x to get the game to work, however, if I do, the new DLC doesn't load. Does anyone have any suggestions for any solutions?

I'm going to move this to feedback. It's been mentioned quite on Steam and elsewhere. it may be a bug.

Not sure if this is the right thread to post this, but my game crashes during first startup right before main menu shows up, but works fine in the later attempts. Could this be a bug too?
