Update on Anti-Aliasing and 'jaggy' lines.

So I've been gone for a few months and it's now well over a year since Odyssey launched. Has anything been promised by Fdev about an ETA for a fix for the downgraded jagginess of the lines in Odyssey? Has it been mentioned in Livestreams? Is it near the top priority of fixes? Do they even still keep us abreast of what the priority fixes are these days?

Thanks in advance.

Much has happened in the narrative, but little, bar the updates to EDO, with the game itself. U14 is due November, something 'different' next year. Sally make appearances here occasionally, but not as often as last year.

Otherwise: All good here, thank you kindly!

I first noticed the aliasing problem with supercruise orbit lines when I changed my GPU from an RX 480 8GB to a RX 6700 XT around March of 2021, prior to Odyssey.

I would guess that Elite actually is their most profitable game. It certainly has the largest / longest running player base.
IIRC their last financial report was revelatory

Oddity has been a pretty universally recognized flop and fell far short of expectations not the least of which was on the financial side

If your FD and see that ED is falling short in both interest and financial performance, you have two options. Do we pump more money into an aging franchise with a spaghetti code base that no one seems to be able to fix? Or, do we focus on the franchises that are generating profit and are still gaining audience?

You have to look at this from a corporate viewpoint with a fiduciary responsibility to shareholders.

As much as we would like to think of ED as DB's hobby and favorite game, even he has to deal with the reality of the current state of the game.

It is not good

Hard to imagine that it will run much past its predicted 10 year life span that was put forth at introduction. Enjoy what we have for the next 2 years. It's probably gone after that unless they release it to public domain and let me host it from my servers.

I hate to be that guy but take a look at Steamcharts. All their other games fail to maintain a steady player base compared to Elite Dangerous. I would guess that most of the money is made with microtransactions, how detailed is the financial report in that regard?

If we ignore F1 22, Elite has more concurrent players than all their other games combined despite the fact that these games were released much later than Elite. Even the very recent F1 22 doesn't perform much better than Elite.

Maybe you guys will laugh on me but the anti aliasing implementation today in ED is a game breaking to me. I look once in a while if this is fixed but sadly apparently it is not, so it is not a good time for me (and others) to go back to the game, unfortunately :(

I'm not sure there is any anti aliasing at all, at least I can't really see a difference in the settings..?

What I did notice is that turning anti aliasing off made the FSS look much worse, so there I think the setting works.

Changing anti aliiasing settings makes no difference for me either, and the AMD options also look dreadful. I have to use normal supersampling and set it to 1.5x for it to be bearable. Even at 2.0x it doesn't go away, and on foot fps drops from 70+ to 15-20 if I go over 1.5x.

dxvk + dxvk.conf file saying AA=16 -> all problems are fixed everywhere ;)

as discussed here:

Interesting.

Here (on an older nVidia GTX1080) with AA on at any level text and lines are slightly fuzzy and not particularly clear. Switch it off though and everything pops out nice and sharp and clear. Mildly jagged lines at 1080 res don't bother me though.

As always, results are going to depend a lot on GPU and drivers...

which problems are you talking about?

dxvk.conf does not have a setting for anti-aliasing. It does have a setting for anisotropic filtering, but that is something quite different (and can already be specified in the game's settings).
