Ships Upgrade from Cobra Mk III

Hey! So I have an almost fully kitted out Cobra Mk III, but I feel like I could be killing the enemies faster. I mainly bounty hunt against NPC's and I want to go after higher ranked enemies. I've heard good things about the Cheiftan, but is it too small of an upgrade to the Cobra? I prefer manuverablility and speed over tanking damage, so I may consider a Eagle build if anyone has any good ideas. Any suggestions on my next ship?

Thanks :)

Edit: I’ve also heard that the courier would be a step up from the cobra. Thoughts?

If you’re hunting, try a vulture, set up nice and it will work nicely for hunting from small to large ships more so if you fly about using fa off

Chieftain should be good upgrade, it is fast and nimble... and with guardian boosters it can have nice shield value also. Or make it Hybrid.

Other option would be Krait - it would be huge upgrade over Cobra but you need like 150m for proper fit. *With lightweight armour

iCourier is really fun ship to fly, but I think it doesn't have good enough punch to be worth the upgrade. You can get it as second or third ship and try it, I strongly suggest that.
Just not as only upgrade from Cobra.

Thank you for the suggestions! My main issue is that the Chieftan is a tad expensive right now, so I’m mainly looking for a stepping stone ship. I can make a good amount by doing passenger missions in my dolphin, but I feel like it would take too long to grind for the chieftan or krait. What do you think?

Edit: maybe a DBX or DBS could be a good upgrade?

Viper mk3 as a side grade. Dbs is a similar story. Next step is courier or vulture. You should really try the vulture - it's made to kill stuff and is excellent at it.

Actually FDL or Mamba (once it's launched) would be a good upgrade. Very fast and nimble, and as long your shields are up, even able to take a few hits.
And although they're quite expensive in purchase, they're much cheaper to outfit than the most other medium ships, since their modules are smaller, but not less powerfull than those of the other ones.
Maybe you could even reuse some of the modules of your Cobra.
That's not giving them an price advantage over the chief (basicly because it is insanely cheap to purchase) but you pay about a half of the Krait.

The real problem is the tremendous gap between the small and the medium fighters. Whilst a top-tier Cobra3 costs about 10million cr, a Chief would already need sixfold the price, a FDL about eightfold. The only ships which are about being a small step upgrade from the Cobra3 are basicly more tanky or more usefull ones. like the ASPs or the Keelback.
So eitherway you begin to save some money for a medium fighter, or you'd need to adept your way.

And about the DBs... They can be a little fun on their own way, but compared to a Cobra, the seem to me more of a downgrade if you look on the speed of those. Even after nearly 4 years of Elite Dangerous, the Cobra just stayed the best compromise between survivability and speed on a small pad, the other real compeditors are the more nimble Vulture (look at that damage and defense, but the top speed is quite low) and iCourier (less damage and either more speed OR better defense, but not both), and the (for you less interesting) more sturdy Viper 4 and the Keelback.

Get a Vulture or Courier.
Otherwise go up to the FDL, FAS, Chieftain or Krait MkII.
I'm a big fan of the FGS too.

You should be able to make the funds in a few hours tops, in a Cobra.

So I've heard really good things about the DBX, but you're saying I should just save up for an FDL, Mamba, or chief?

It is pretty cool, in both meanings, but not a real advantage over the Cobra, since it's pretty slow, and, well, a bit strange to handle.
To make it short, most ships in Elite handle like planes. Not so the DBX. It's more of a Helicopter. that's cool and makes a lot fun, but as mentioned, you'd have to adept your style.

Since I was once in a similar Situation, (although we had back in these days no real micro-tanks, with the Cobra3 beeing the most sturdy ship on a small pad) I gone for a T6 and with that for a budget-FDS.
Nowadays you'll progress a lot faster, but to get a budget Chief (where modules cost a lot) or FDL (where you'd get quick your Upgrades, while it takes longer to get the ship itself) with your Dolphin, would be maybe the most risky way, but also the fastest.
But to be honest, thats basicly the way I got myself to most of my ships. get the payment, and modules afterwards. IMO there is no need to start with A-Grade if you'll be carefull.

I'm not sure if I should recommend this way, but personally I never had a backfall that forced me to sell the entire ship again.

If you are looking for a combat ship, the next step up is the Vulture (unless you have the required Imperial rep for the imperial courier). Otherwise, you'll probably just want to save up for the chieftain or other more expensive ships.

I do have the Imperial Rep. Would you suggest the Courier over the Vulture?
Honestly I'd suggest trying them both out. Both excellent combat ships in different ways. I think the vulture is the easier combat ship though some may disagree.

Remember you lose no money selling modules and only 10%when selling a ship so you don't lose much when you sell a ship if you don't like it.

A lot depends on your budget and on how much effort you want to put into grinding money for your next ship.

A-rated Vulture will be much better (and more fun) then a D-rated FDL or FAS or Mamba etc.

You can A-rate a Vulture for approx. 20mln which is half the price of stock FDL. I have fully engineered most of the combat ships in the game and Vulture is still my favourite.

Imperial Courier is cool as well but won't give you this "I sit inside of X-Wing" type of feeling ;) Vulture is easier to fly then Courier as well. Mainly becauae of a better punch and a really strong shields for it's class.

Try both and keep the one you like more. I'd pick Vulture though :)

Courier obviously! (see sig for my build) Head to Baldr for 15% off $$$.
I have every ship in the game. My primary ship is Courier. That ship does it all! (well, except haul lots of cargo)

What's your Cobra3 loadout? You won't really get any more firepower with a Courier (it's just a LOT better looking :p ). You might be better off sticking with your Cobra for a while longer.

Vulture is a definite firepower upgrade, but it's ugly.

Thanks for the input! Here is my cobra loadout

I've heard from a lot of people that I should just save up for a pricer ship. Should I just put my nose to the grindstone to get a top-tier ship?

Thanks again!

I'd suggest something more like this for your current Cobra:

Are you planning on engineering at all?

I still like to fly my small ships even though I have many alternatives.
Both the Courier and Vulture are ships you may very well prefer to the medium and larges.

If you decide to wait just remember that the modules are the priciest part of upgrading for combat, and your rebuys will be more too.
My combat Krait is ~270 million, FGS about 180, FDL 215...

I honestly don't know much about engineering. I know that it's the "Fine-tuning" of ships, so I have put-off learning about it until I finish my builds.

I'll give the build you suggested a try!

Thanks!

Edit: Where do I get frag cannons so cheap? I'm in the Brestla system and they cost 1.4 mil!

2nd Edit: They are Multi-Crew and turreted, so the price makes more sense. Where can I find gimballed ones?

Here's a build for the Vulture with no engineering, as you can see the biggest issue is limited power with an engineered armoured power plant you get more power and less heat generation and efficient lasers will also use less power and fire for longer.

Here's the same build with grade 1 armoured power plant and grade 4 efficient lasers, these mods are available from Felicity Farseer (Deciat) and the Dweller (Wyrd) once you unlock acess to the engineers.
