Newcomer / Intro Upgrade from joystick with throttle to horas?

Hi folks,
Just started ED recently and I've been using my trusty old MS force feedback 2. It has twist, throttle and 8 buttons so thinking about something like a thrustmaster hotas X I only gain an extra 4 buttons. Other option in my price range is saitek X52 which obviously gains a lot more buttons. Is the hotas option worth springing for given that my current setup has bases mostly covered? Does the hotas setup add more somehow?

Thanks.

In short - yes.

In long :)D) - If you like playing with a joystick and consider it a worthy investment, go for it. X52 is an awesome HOTAS. There are several things that are more important than just number of buttons. You also have more analog axes and, for example a very nice POV hat under your left index finger to control your lateral thrust.
You will feel your ship more with a proper instrument. :)

The X52 adds a pinky "shift" button which allows you to double up commands on buttons, and on the throttle side you get the added benefit of having secondary thrusters under your left index finger [VERY convenient]

X52 PRO adds a slightly stiffer spring [the X52 standard is a bit light and mushy IMO] and with a little research can potentially be had for less/same price compared to the price of the X52 standard. I paid $130 for mine.

I can't recommend the X52 line enough O7

Game supports more then 1 joystick far as I can tell it supports the direct input limit of 127, So just add a 2nd joystick. I fly with 2, and its incredibly fun to fly Newtonian based space sims with 2 sticks. You need a desk with a keyboard draw so you can have full keyboard access while using them underneath them too. And yes the learning curve for using 2 sticks is very high, but once you do you can take it to other sims like this one.
I learned long ago to use 2 sticks in a Space sim called Terminus from early 2000's and never went back from it, its just so much fun using 2 hands to fly in space.
Really beats a hotas setup in about every-way, unless you get pedals and really like pedals, but you can add pedals to a 2 stick setup too..... soooooo
2 joysticks are usually cheaper then a single hotas, will give you more buttons and an extra throttle\roll axis. I recommend simply 2 Logitech Extreme 3d Pro's which are like 30$ or less each depending where you get them.

Yes, a HOTAS will add a 2nd stick and a seperate throttle. :p I use Hotas X for throttle and thruster control, and a primary stick for pitch/roll/yaw. Works fine. Having two sticks + throttle means you'll have some space for redundancy controls as well.

I've been using the t-flight hotas x for 18 months and its a fine controller - creaks a bit but does the job. But wait for a few weeks - Thrustmaster are about to release a new hotas combo based on the T16000M which is a MUCH better stick.
