Hardware & Technical Upgrade from Microsoft Sidewinder

So I picked up a Microsoft Sidewinder (1 no force feedback or anything) from a good will for $3.50 and it seems to be in perfect working condition.

so I picked up Elite Dangerous as I had seen many good things and am wondering if the stick will be enough for the game or if I should think about getting an upgrade... if so what should I upgrade to?

also is there a guide for configuring the joystick? I have been a die hard keyboard and mouse fan for over 20 years so not so familiar with joystick setup.

thanks in advance!!

Provided that you can get the stick to work on windows, I don't see any problems with it as a starter stick. I owned on in the past and remember it being a great stick at the time.

If I remember correctly, it has x, y axis. A Throttle, POV and a bunch of buttons.
As a starter stick it should be ok to get you up and running.

You'll have to use a combo of joystick and keyboard to be able to access all the functions, but that won't be a big deal - most people do that.
