Cool that they have done that. I would just like to point out in case anyone reads this and gets confused, and you can be sure someone will at some point..... THIS IS BETA ACCESS FOR HORIZONS ONLY!

I hope they do the lifetime passes again at some point for enthusiastic people such as yourself. I already have one and have no problem with FDEV bringing them back.

Enjoy!

You mean I don't have to wait another month to start playing with my huge beam laser? :O

So... tempting... Need... BEAM LASER!

Wait, you're gonna pay extra money to play with stuff that will be totally nerfed before general release? Why?!?

Tempting though it is, and a huge wish for the sort of multi-cannons that go BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRIP instead of dakka dakka dakka ;) , my money is staying firmly in my wallet

Had enough fun with being a kerbal space program beta tester

Bill

... although if it came with a free Kerbal bobblehead.....

Beta isn't for early access it's to help the game you love be developed right so huge beam lasers don't do less damage than a cat scratching your ship and don't blast sidewinders within 3 seconds :p Balance is indeed a thing as you mentioned, feedback from beta players does affect the way the game works and how the developers choose to do things. This change in itself (beta being made available) is feedback... As the Op says "[Frontier] really does listen to it's players" :)

Although true most people do it for the excitement of early access. It's the ability to see things first, play with them in a risk free environment (save games don't transfer and you can buy stuff real cheap in beta).
Many people actually do PvP battles in beta since re-buy really doesn't matter and you can buy an FDL for 5mil with the discounts for testing.

Beta paid for, download started, "Data.ovs.textures_l1 Validation Error" to the face. :(

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=213422

May fix itself after a while.

In the mean time I can suggest:
Try re-starting launcher.
Try validating game files for your base game.
Try restarting pc

As a last resort open the folder and delete all the test-server data and re-start the download from scratch.
The usual stuff. And see how you go. Feel free to add to the bug report linked above.

The other option is to quit everything, open up the Frontier folder (steam or otherwise) and copy the _64 folder contents into the _test server folder. This may cause more harm than good as when I did it I got an error but it may be worth a shot.

Edit: It seems others are getting similar stuff, if you can provide me a directory path (if you have one) I can see if I can give you my local file to paste in manually.

Thanks for the tips! I had already deleted the test data and am re-downloading, if that doesn't do the trick I'll try some of the other options. :)

So, do we still have to pay for beta access if we haven't already? I'm a little confused. Help a pony out here would you?

Not 100% sure what you are asking. If you have a Lifetime Expansion Pass, or bought the Horizons Beta package, you don't have to pay.
If you want to beta test Engineers and you can't with your existing package, you can pay £6.99 to upgrade
If you don't want to beta test, you don't have to pay anything :)

I edited my above post. Good luck and let me know here if you want a manual file thrown across...

You do not have to. You now have the option to.

If you want beta and have the base horizons season pass then you can pay £7 for beta access to the season. Or you can wait for updates to come out of beta and be applied (For 2.1 I expect about 3-4 weeks from now but that's subject to my guess and how much the developers want to bugfix).

Originally the season pass was a product sold either with (1) or without beta (2). The price difference at the time was ~£10. Later it was changed to a DLC (3) and the price was reduced. The DLC did not include Beta.
1) You already have access
2 or 3) You can upgrade now
4) You have the lifetime expansion pass to all beta's and updates

Or 5 you don't have horizons so this is moot unless you wish to buy horizons DLC (3) and beta.

Second line answered my question. Ah okay, I see now.

Nah', I'll stick to my standard access.

OP, I know I sent you a PM, I was just desperate for answers. :D

Many thanks. :)

It's crapping out for me now at Elite Dangerous\Products\PUBLIC_TEST_SERVER_64\Win64\Items\Stations\Shared\GenericStationMaterial\Data.ovs.textures_l0

I was an Imperial texture before, I might be moving backwards. >_< I tried deleting the file but it keeps erroring at the same point. If you could manually send me one, I'd much appreciate it.

Here bud, hope it works for you. This is the 3rd manual file I've done but I haven't heard back yet from the people I sent them to so I have no idea if it works doing it like this. No reason why not but as I say no confirmation :)
