Upgrading/Engineering Odyssey Gear - Forced into Illegal Activity?

I'm the type to illegal activities anyway, but for someone who wants to play the way they want to play, how do they acquire all the materials to upgrade/engineer Odyssey gear?

I've seen many missions that don't offer the same materials that can be stolen. Is it possible to upgrade/engineer all Odyssey gear without doing illegal activities?

PS Thanks for any contribution to the thread.

I steal lots, but I don't murder. iirc there are only a handful of things that are hard to get completely legally but it's still doable, just slow.

I got all my Suits & Weapons upgraded to G5 & fully modded without touching any 'Steal' or 'Stealth' or 'Heist' missions - killed lots though ;).

Did lots of restore/reactivate missions & even went back to Colonia to finish off my 'Suppression' mods, i think.

I just took my time......accepting Missions where you get stuff in advance, like Power Regulators, & abandoning them, then paying off the fine worked a treat too:cool:

All the assets can be got legally through reactivate/restore missions. Many goods and data too.

The rest can be stolen. There are legal ways but they are much less common so it's slower.

I don't have a problem with theft; it's what traditional space rogues are supposed to do.
It just seems like there are a LOT of materials I have never seen as mission rewards in 300 hours of playing Odyssey. I wonder why illegal activity option outweighs the legal activity option. It seems extremely odd.

Fetch/deliver missions too. Plus you can scavenge crash sites and similar POIs on planet surfaces.
Good to know.

Stealing mission items definitely seems illegal. :p

Thanks for sharing all.

Salvaging from an abandoned settlement is legit. Bumping off scavs is also legal and rewarded by the owners of the settlement.
I have G5 kit on 2 accounts with 7 engineers unlocked and no murders.

AFAIK, it does pay off to move around, what's on offer also depends on BGS.

If you only stay in one anarchy system, you're likely to be missing out.

excuse my ignorance . I have not done it much so I may just be doing it wrong but.... how do you steal stuff on foot and get away with it? I find myself getting scanned all the time. is there an equivalent to silent running to stop the ainfrom scanning you and going hostile? or is there a suit upgrade to make scans.miss some gear ?

thanks

Avoid the guards, its not that hard. If they dont hear your footsteps like when u crouch, you can pass next to them, provided they dont see u... (preety much any of them have a moment during thier patrol route, where stop next to a wall or crate, and use that to sneak past them) Thier scan only trigger if u are close enough, about 3-4m, and if u are far enough, u can even let them see u, long as u aint are at restricted area.

You can steal assets without consequence if no one sees you. Stolen goods will be detected on a scan so you have to avoid guards. Case a settlement before you do anything. Scan all the personnel so you know where they are at all times and where they're looking (the tracking mod is handy for this). Mark their routines. Make sure no one is looking when you take stuff, if you take goods plan your exit and be sure you can avoid scans. Guards don't scan you unless they are inside the red circle on your radar.

Or stick to the rooftops, if caught and a guard is about to scan you, you can also evade the scan by pulling out a gun. You'll be asked to put it away, and the guard will have forgotten all about scanning. You only get this get out of jail card once though.. :)

A large EXT settlement is easiest to start with. Ideally you'll have a Maverick with enhanced tracking.
The storage building has skylights that NPCs conveniently walk and wait under who you can grab an id from. One layout has a door that isn't patrolled, lvl 1. Once in walk around and get every NPC on your radar. When none are in line of sight help yourself. If the SRV is waiting outside you can clear the building and drive round to the ext building and slip in when the guard wanders off and loot that as well.
If you're downloading data be aware of which are alarmed.
You might be able to flick the alarms off though you'll probably need to practice getting that done a few times.
You can get the codes to open the maglocked lockers from the terminals with a lvl 2 id.

The place to start I think, is ask yourself "what am I going to be doing that requires upgrades and mods". With G3 gear available, and limiting yourself to only legal activities, what do you need upgraded gear for?

And some carriers will sell Odyssey materials.

War. Fighting in OFCZs is completely legal and, while you don't really need g5 fully modded gear even for the high czs, it is nice to have.

My frustrations with getting engineering mats for Odyssey have mostly evaporated over time as I've found ways to get everything I need fairly quickly and legally (mostly through restore missions... It's not theft, it's compensation) but I still find it ridiculous that gear upgrades are not available via OFCZs. Adding an OFCZs material reward system would go a long way toward making them worth playing.
