Upgrading for the oculus and need advice.

Right now I am playing elite on this system...

AMD Phenom II X4 965 3.4 GHz
EVG Geforce GTX 980 Ti FTW
16GB Corsair Dominator DDR3 1600
8 x USB 2.0

And it plays perfectly with no slowdowns or loss of details. I even run with most things on max.
But I am looking to replace my cpu as its a little dated and under par for the oculus.
I will be keeping the GPU as its new but...
I was wondering if the following would be ok and a good setup for the oculus as I am only looking to spend about £500 on the system.

Intel Core i7 6700K Skylake @ 4.6GHz, (Factory OC with water cooling)
EVG Geforce GTX 980 Ti FTW
8GB Corsair 2666MHz DDR4
Asus Z170 Pro Gaming, (2 x USB 2.0 4 x USB 3.0 1 x USB 3.1 Type-A 1 x USB 3.1 Type-C)

Also I have always been an AMD person so i know little about Intel chips.

Thank you for any help.

Good setup though I'd go for 16GB of ram if you can.

i was an AMD person who made to jump to intel about 6 years ago and never looked back. that being said, your current rig should run vr just fine. OC that chip a little if you can.

The chip i have is the black edition so i could over clock...just not going to with the stock cooler and its pushing a few years old now....just think its time to move on. Also my CPU and USB fail the oculus ready check.

That oculus check is quite happy to fail even if it would work just fine.
The main point is GPU. I to have a 980ti and it's fine.
Would a 1080 be better? Well of course. But I don't see the need to upgrade this cycle.

Second point is a quad core cpu. I have an i5 4670 @ 3.4 as well. Currently clocked it up to 4.1 and the difference is negligible if at all any higher fps.

In short I would, since you already have the gpu. I would try by maybe only getting a USB 3 expansion board those cost between $20 and $40 and is probably the most likely part your actually missing.

Are you seeing a utilization issue when playing? Metrics are your friend.

Since this is essentially the fastest thing on the market (unless you have software that scales past 4 cores); I would hope it's OK.

RAM is cheap, and 8GB is a waste right this moment. I put 32 in mine, I wouldn't consider less than 16.

Also I have always been an AMD person so i know little about Intel chips.
They are faster and cooler and have been for some time now.

My system has ssd but there old and the video card is a FTW meaning its factory overclocked. Also I just got that so not going to replace it. :) I think ill go with the above and just get 16GB or ram for it...it sould work well im just trying to get the best for my cash. Scan Computers does this as a bundle for less than £500 in the uk. I have a 900W PSU and 2x 256GB SSDs its just the CPU MB and RAM I need.

Thank you all for the help.

maybe this will help.. up until a few weeks ago, I was running an i7 3820@4.5 with 16g 1600mhz ram and two gtx 670's in sli. I was playing elite in my CV1 with ingame settings a mix of vr low and high and getting exceptionally good performance considering the hardware. I recently upgraded from the x79 to the z170 platform with an i7 6700k, 16g corsair dom platinum@ 2666 an i shiny new GTX1080. while im now able to max out all settings, the performance of each system respective of the gfx settings are the same.

The problem is that you don't know if the processor or the vidcard made the difference (hint: vid card).

I ran ED pretty well on a non-OC 2500k. It's not too processor demanding.

If your willing to blow a wad on a new cpu, mobo and ram, I don't see why you would worry about overclocking your current rig first to see what it gives you. What have you got to loose? You will need a reliable USB 3 solution, but I wouldn't worry about the cpu failing the Oculus test. It doesn't bench your cpu. Ed and VR in general are much more GPU intensive and your 980 is pretty good. Then again a 6700k rig will make you quite future proofed.
Run 3DMark Firestrike to see where your rig stands.

Oh i totally know what made the difference. what i was trying to show was that a relatively old CPU can handle elite with the right gpu solution if you're willing to sacrifice some of the pretty.

3 run average of 19,477 for me :)

I'd stay with the system as-is and see how it runs.

If you do go for the high-end box, definitely go for 16GB of DDR4 RAMas a minimum.

Thank you Beavis this was very help full :) +1 rep

While AMDchips perform under Intel currently, they do so at a significant cost savings. 90% of the performance for 20% of the price in some cases.

The new AMD Zen chips are due to come out soon and those will offer excellent performance from the reports seen so far. My plan is to upgrade my game rig to a new octo core Zen, ASUS Mobo, DDR4 RAM and Samsung 950 PCIe SSD combo. I suspect that will blow away the vast majority of CPU's on the market and give lots of headroom for the future.

If you can wait until the end of the year, I'd use what you have now then upgrade on release. The next gen of pascal video cards will be out then as well. :)

As I said the system I have now runs ELITE great right now in 2D.

I cannot add USB 3.0 as I have a raid control card in the way.

I think following from the advice here ill put a little extra into 16GB or ram and not over clock the cpu and stick to the stock of 4.0 and 4.2 boost

Total cost of around £500 - £600 with the cost of the Oculus to add later in the year.

So over all my total spend for EVERYTHING will be around £1500 all in. To play elite in 3D on the Oculus as it was intended :D

So my new Oculus ready system as it stands will be. (I already have the GPU and will not be replacing it. I also have all the other bits needed like SSD and PSU.)

Intel Core i7 6700K Skylake @ 4.0GHz, (4.2GHz Boost) STOCK no OC

EVG Geforce GTX 980 Ti FTW

16GB Corsair 3000MHz DDR4 (up from 8GB as advised)

Asus Z170 Pro Gaming, (2 x USB 2.0 4 x USB 3.0 1 x USB 3.1 Type-A 1 x USB 3.1 Type-C)

So basically ill be getting this with a few tweeks.
