Upgrading from i5-4670k to i7 4790k, Any particular benches you would like to see ?

Title says it, I'm swapping my i5 out for an available i7, and just the cpu, nothing else.
Mostly because I think it's throttling me in cases, and partial curiosity and a non-professional attempt at answering the "cpu in VR question".

CPU should arrive today, was thinking of swapping it in tomorrow.

I am curious, I currently have a 4690k in one machine, always wondered if an i7 would up the VR performance at all.

Some situation that's easy to reproduce, and where your current setup gets less than 90 FPS (isn't that the required amount for smooth VR experience?).

So far I have 40 minutes video of me in a res, where I capture the game window, the CpuID monitor and task manager, so you can see each core's and gpu utilization running with the game, as well as what processes are chewing the cpu at.

I was thinkging repeating these, and any other specific tests you want me to try ?

Think you will get it much better with ASW = OFF. Dips lots in Station here and constant 45fps at RES. ASW also will not account for the upgraded i7 and so will certainly benefit once installed to have this set OFF.

I get my GTX 1080 SC2 in a few hours ;)

I was having a play last night with my i5 4690k and my 1080 with overclocking as I've noticed lately my cpu usage has jumped quite a bit. So I put my cpu up to 4.2 ghz from 3.5 ghz to c if it helped temps stopped around 60c but only dropped the usage slightly.

I then tried the 1080 managed to get it stable at graphics 2050 and memory to 5600 ghz which seemed to help a bit with the cpu. But things are a lot smoother especially with asw switched off. Not sure where the problem lies but things have definitely changed in the last few months well for me anyways. But next thing for me was an upgrade to an i7 so will be interested in your results with ED over the next few weeks

I'm doing the exact same, 4690k to 4790k, (should be arriving in the next day or two) CPU was peaking well into the 90%'s in CZ and was getting stutter and crashes.

I don't mind asw, I would much rather have 45 with ASW than 75 without.
It makes combat possible.

What I do mind is when I don't even have the headroom to keep up with that and everything turns to garbage.

And since I'm seeing gpu hardly exceeding 60% during play, and cpu hovering around 90.
I'm going for this first, naturally I'll test without asw but it is honestly very good feature, I much prefer a little rippling in certain situations rather than the horrible ghosting that was the old method.
Maybe if I'm a good little boy santa has a ryzen/kaby lake machine for me :)

i am in process of upgrade, and I choose an i5 7600 with an OC around 4.5ghz. From my reads, it seems the i7 will not really provide much more unless doing heavy graphical editing or perhaps coupling gameplay with live streaming.

Thus, if you are not a livestream youtuber/twitch channel denizen or heavy graphical artist/designer, is the i7 worth the extra dollars for a top notch gaming/VR rig?

Well it's only in elite I'm noticing anything, just been playing robo recall where I have basically set everything apart from supersampling to max, and not noticed a single hitch.

But I am considering more and more that for vr cpu is an important part, but my old i5 is close, really close to good enough.

But almost there isn't the right side of good, hence the cpu.

It's cheaper to test with this (I found a discounted cpu to boot, so its not costing me more than an i5 would) than spending $2000 on a new build...

Picked it up, and popped it in after dinner.

Just done some basic assurance testing for now and some minor romps in elite, mostly making sure it's not bursting into flames or anything.

So far so good, temps seem fine at <60 at full loads etc etc.

A funny thing is, I got a lower steamvr test score with the i7 than my old i5, even at single core it should be a bit better, considering its about a full GHz faster.
This might just be something in the background or whatever, it was like 77 frames total.

Cinebench is more clear and as expected.
In elite I do notice a definite difference, a small one but definite.
Sure I'm not seeing 90 consistently but seems far more responsive in combat and it picks back up quicker.

I'll do more consistent testing tomorrow evening.
