Ships Upgrading from Vulture - What to Pick?

So I've just recently gotten back into the game after a very extended hiatus. When I left engineers weren't a thing, and I was in for a rather nasty surprise the first time I took my Vulture out into a more dangerous hazres/powerplay zone. Before I stopped playing, my ship felt like it could take on the world and emerge unscathed. Now it was getting torn to shreds by effects I'd never heard of. As a result I looked into some builds and decided to unlock all the engineers I needed to get it back into fighting form.

The build I was looking at is https://s.orbis.zone/4yso , which is a modified version of the 'Ultimate Bounty Hunting Vulture' from a video by CMDR Exigeous, changing out the long range for short range (as I've heard the jitter makes the weapons nigh unusable at longer range).

However, as I've been flying around the galaxy in a ship that is not my Vulture unlocking engineers, I've begun to wonder if the effort to get my old ship up to snuff wouldn't be better spent getting a medium combat ship and I've been trying to figure out which one. Money isn't of particular concern because I'm pretty confident I can wrangle up the cash for just about anything at the moment.

That said, I've been sort of spoiled by the way the Vulture flies, and I understand any replacement in a bigger size is going to take some getting used to. Something that isn't paper once the shields go down would be nice (though I prefer to have something where I never have to worry about the shields going down in the first place). I've been looking at pretty much all the medium 'combat-capable' vessels: Fer-de-Lance, Mamba, Python, Federal Assault Ship, and the Alliance Chieftain seem to be the main contenders. I will say that the FdL is probably out just from the start due to the cockpit layout (I know the off-center chair and strut will bug the snot out of me).

I only PvE, so it doesn't need to contend with PvPers. And if folks think I should just stick with my Vulture, that's fair as well. I may be suffering from 'newship-itis' a little given all the options.

TL;DR Indecisive CMDR can't decide on new combat ship, wants something that flies as close to the old one as possible.

I look forward to seeing the comments!

I went from the Vulture to a FAS. The FAS is a Vulture on steroids. Almost the same agility, fly like on rails, takes a BIG punsh and deals out pretty well.

First keep your Vulture and engineer it to the max. Your ship will feel totally new and you'll appreciate what Engineers do for you.

Then, if you like the Vulture a lot, I'd recommend either the Fed Assault Ship or (my favourite,) the Alliance Chieftain.

That said, there are no wrong answers for PvE.

Have fun!

Kind of depends on what you mean by upgrade. Are you thinking laterally (small to small) or larger? If you like pew pew, than I'd suggest a Krait MkII.

The engineering definitely seems to improve a lot of aspects of ships that may seem lackluster at first. The Asp Explorer I've been tooling around in to unlock engineers has all these semi-engineered modules (whatever I have to do to get their ranks up) which are definite improvements over the stock experience. I've been keeping that vision of 'what will my Vulture look like once it's done' in my head, which helps with the grind.

The upgrade I'm thinking of is going from a small ship to one of the bigger medium size ones. I've got a Krait MkII that I kitted out for mining (which has been a giant help with income), but the flight model feels like a brick. The pitch especially just seems so unresponsive to me. Dunno if engineering would fix that, but if there's something that feels more responsive, engineering would make those ships even more so, I imagine.

Sounds like so far the FAS or the Chieftain/Challenger are the recommendations. On that note, what exactly are the differences between the Chieftain/Challenger? Is one just more multipurpose?

Challenger a bit more tanky, but it's down to personal taste, how you fly.

I agree with what others have said: FAS, Chief or Chally.

FAS is nice if you're used to a Vulture.

Go modify some 6A drives with dirty drag engineering. You can swap those drives between each of the suggested ships (FAS, MkII, Chief, Challenger). Test each of the ships and go with the one whose flight model you prefer. It might cost you a bit of cheddar buying/selling ships, but worth it in the long run.

Chieftain is fast and agile with solid firepower and hull tanking capacity. Challenger is slower, slightly less agile, with slightly more firepower, and a thicker hull. The Chieftain is more like the Vulture in terms of flight model. I really enjoy both, and either would be solid.

Here's several I use

Krait mk2 the efficient boost rebuild means it can more agile than the numbers would suggest

https://coriolis.io/outfit/krait_mk...YHMA28QgIwVyKBQA==&bn=Krait Mk II ICS Mustang

Mamba bonkers fast but not that agile although it has a decent cockpit (unlike the FDL!!!)

https://coriolis.io/outfit/mamba?co...UwIYHMA28QgIwV3fEQA==&bn=Mamba fragger beam 2

Gunship oldie but goodie ;) (remember plasma accs do absolute damage ignoring resistances so the DPS is higher than it would appear)

https://coriolis.io/outfit/federal_...A=.EweloBhBGA2EoFMCGBzANokMK4fiIA==&bn=FGS ST

Challenger a lot of concentrated DPS (the hardpoints are tightly grouped together), also makes a great small scale void opal miner

https://coriolis.io/outfit/alliance...hBGA2EoFMCGBzANokMK4fiIA==&bn=Challenger B3R4

Python very much a large ship killer as anything under Asp size with PA's is too much like hard work! ;)

I'm in a similar situation and someone suggested this video:

I tried the Chieftain already, but ended up going back to the Vulture during the past few sessions because I was used to flying the ship. But I did decide to focus on the Chieftain for the next few weeks/months to see how it works out. If it's not vibing, I might try something else - not sure what though, maybe the Mamba.

I absolutely love the way that the Chieftain handles in flight. The only other pure combat ship I'd recommend is the FDL.

I haven't played since before the changes to the stellar scanners and stuff came in, but I spent a lot of time perfecting my Vulture, and this is an absolute BEAST. You can swap out modules depending on role desired, linked is for bounty hunting. https://s.orbis.zone/552p

Engineering changes everything. I understand that you are not into PvP, but if you want to keep your options open, either fully engineer your vulture or a mamba. The unparalleled speed of a mamba is a game changer. Convergence is awful, but with gimballed, you should be fine.
