Upgrading ship components

Been away from the game for a couple of years and the new interface for upgrading ship components is a little confusing. In the past, when I upgraded a component, I got a credit for the old component. Now it seems that you have no choice but to store the old component. Have trouble figuring out how to sell, but occasionally stumble onto how to do, but the sell value is zero. What's up with this? Is there a limit on how many ship components can be stored?

The value should be zero for loaned modules. Those you purchased will be fully refunded or discounted in the price of the new module, depending on the option you chose.

Yeah, these weren't loaned modules. I had the Sidewinder that came with my new start, but purchased an Eagle. When I went to upgrade the Eagle components, everything was stored without an option to trade in. As I said, I finally stumbled on a screen to sell those stored modules and value was zero. I must be missing something. Can't find updated videos on ED for the new interface.
