Upgrading Ship: sell "good" modules first? Or with ship trade-in?

The title kind of says is all. Do I get more credits by selling off the good stuff and then trading in? Or is my ship worth the same amount in credits with the upgraded modules installed?

What have you guys discovered?

Thanks.

Modules appear to be bought and sold for the same price (atm). The hull is depreciated (by 10%?) at the point of trade-in or sale in the shipyard so IMHO you are better off swapping out all the modules for whatever the cheapest is at the time. Start with selling off the cargo racks, scanners, weapons, utilities and shields. Swap to the worst thrusters you can find next and finally swap all the remaining stuff for the lowest rate gear they have. Once you've liquidated all the modules feel free to part-ex the hull in for something better!

Basically its the same thing you do when trading a car in! Who gives away floor mats and stereos?!

EDIT: I should add that I have not tested this thoroughly, perhaps I will on the next trade-up.

As far as I know it is more favourable to sell modules or exchange them to the cheaper ones. Then to trade-in the rest. There is a third possible solution - make more money and keep your old ship.

Yea this kind of annoyed me the other night. I traded my 500,000cr+ Viper for a Cobra the other night and thought that was all well and good. Then my friend says, "Hey, I heard if you sell each module first you get more money than the trade in value." ... I thought ohhhhhh.... That would suck. Is it true? So he tried and yup! He had a similar kitted Viper and made roughly 100k more than me on the trade in. Gotta love that! No warning. Nothing. How are we supposed to know this stuff? Come on.

Sounds like a programming error to me.

Great! Thanks for the responses. I thought that this was the case, but I've only been playing a couple weeks and maybe I was just seeing it wrong. I wasn't.

Cheers.

I think it's simply to make it easier to swap modules around since they don't allow for module storage or direct exchange.

I'm not going to pay 1.5 mil multiple times for an advanced discovery scanner, so if I can sell it five minutes while I switch ships and then rebuy for the same price, I'm happy with that.

So, the station kind of "holds" your trade-in module while you shop? It'll be available to you for re-purchase then? (fingers crossed!)

If you are a trader then I reckon it's more efficient to part out your old vessel, trade-in to a new, bigger ship and then a few hours later buy another of the same type as the old model if you want to keep one! I will probably keep my Asp when I upgrade but it will be missing the fancy FSD (that's 5m right there!)

I can confirm this. I recently changed ships and looked at what my total would be for a straight trade, then I sold the modules and checked my total again. I was coming out ahead by selling the modules first.

Yes it does, I'm sure I fitted the cargo racks and power plant from my T6 to the new Asp. They are there for the duration of your stay at the same station, dunno what happens if your session ends/logout etc.

Wow, wish I had known this a week ago. I had a well kitted out T6 but wanted to do some fighting. I thought of buying back my old Cobra, but then realised that the Asp ought to be able to trade and fight, so I bought that. Just did a straight part-ex and thought that I spent more money than I expected given some of the modules that were on board. Did a few upgrades on the Asp, but decided that it was neither good at trading or fighting and that I would be better off with my old T6 and a fully kitted out Cobra as overall they were cheaper, and better for each individual job. So again I just did a straight part-ex, and once again thought I ended up with less money than I expected - I will know for the future when I change the T6 for a T7!

On a positive note, I think my poor ship selling skills just wiped out all the bonus credits that I had made from double selling goods over the New Year bug problem, so perhaps what goes around comes around.

Yep. This is totally true as I've just confirmed (not that it needed it...you've done it...but I did it and then came back to the forums).

Good to know!

When you trade a ship in you get 10% less than it's value (modules included)

So sell all of the modules that you can.

Also downgrade any modules that you can't sell (thrusters, FSD, Power plant etc) to their cheapest available spec (e.g. 2E) you will get the most money from your old ship.

If you had any useful modules you can then buy them back for your new ship.
