Newcomer / Intro Upgrading to a vulture

If you fit it out properly, it will wee on almost everything from a great height. It's possible that your fitout, tactics or technique are letting you down.

To OP: I upgraded from Cobra to Vulture, and... I noticed a BIG improvement into Combat zones.
More resistant, faster to turn/strafe, deals more damages. Only loss is the speed...

I upgraded this weekend from a Viper to a Vulture: Mine is almost stock with a few small upgrades since I decided even that would be better than the Viper - and I was right.

I have been using mine in Resource Extraction Zones (RES) -> planetary rings with asteroid fields which tend to be full of mining NPCs, police and pirates. It's slow in a straight line, but makes up for it in agility. So easy to keep guns on target. Melts anything Cobra or smaller in seconds. Fighting Pythons, clippers and dropship NPCs was effortless. Anacondas still take some care, but are fine as long as you wait for some system authority vessels to come over and take some of the Anaconda's fire.

For reference, Esumindii sells everything you could want for your shiny new Vulture. I ended up compromising like this on my entry spec variant:

The plan is to slowly upgrade the internals for more power and better shields. Better thrusters don't really seem necessary (especially since they are a heavy power drain and that power can't be missed from shields and weapons). Furthermore, I'm not sure upgraded armor is even worth the bother for RES hunting, since it doubles the value of the ship (and rebuy cost) and only helps in situations where the NPC has already taken down your shields...

[As far as I'm aware upgrading to military armor means 50% damage reduction on all armor hits, so one can achieve the same effect by applying the 4D hull reinforcement since it effectively doubles the armor rating of the ship and will allow you to take twice as many hits for a LOT less cash outlay and less weight]

Just bought a Vulture last night (from a Viper) and wheeee. It's so much fun. It's crazily nimble, you can out-turn almost anything, and with FA off it spins so fast you could take someone's eye out. Was worried about only having 2 hard points, but with two decent weapons (have 2 gimballed Class 2 beam lasers for now, can't afford Class 3 yet) and to be honest taking on anything less than an Anaconda feels like bullying! (And I'm only fighting Wanted NPCs, I don't think I could handle the guilt of shooting down Sidewinder/Eagle/Cobra Cmdrs in this thing).

It is a bit more vulnerable than my upgraded Viper, so I need to save up more to beef up shields & armour. But for now.. wheeeeee!

I love how each craft is so different in terms of cockpit / visibility / sounds! The Vulture sounds like an angry wasp, muffled and trapped in a megaphone.

I also upgraded my Cobra to Vulture. And it is a beast. So much more effective than Cobra and more durable than Viper.

I'm using the C3 beam lasers and anything from ASP and below get's destroyed quickly.

Definitely a favorite combat ship from now on.

Try a pair of class 3 gimballed pulse lasers. They melt stuff fine (being class 3) and yet there's enough power to run them hard.

..or you could split the difference and use gimballed C3 burst lasers :)

They're a pretty happy medium, actually- you need to be a bit more discriminating than with a pulse, but they're easier to fit in your heat and power budget- and they still pack quite a punch if you fire when locked.

I'm using C3 Fixed beam lasers and the Vulture is just a wrecking ball. Generally I'm taking on Cobra's and bigger where there is plenty to aim at with the fixed beams. That said I've taken out Eagles, Sidewinders and Vipers in a war zone as well. This is one little birdy that can more than handle itself.

Hmm, I actually was not overwhelmed on the first try... While shooting down a Viper I felt I was doing quite a bit less damage than in my Cobra, which had 2x C1G pulse lasers and 2x C2G auto cannons...

Yes I took down his shields faster, but taking down the hull takes that much longer - and the Viper will just constantly do hit and runs, making it hard to efficiently place my fire on him.

The Vulture is a monster

I got bored while on the trade grind for my Clipper and got to about 18M cash. I figured I'd buy a Vulture to try it out and then sell it once I get enough bounties for the sexy Clipper.

That all changed very quickly once I dropped all 18M on the Vulture.

I'm sitting at around ~20-22M invested in it right now, with dual C3 Plasma Accelerators fitted at the cost of dropping to 4D shields for power conservation (which leaves my shields only slightly stronger or weaker than a 3A Viper, but I make up for that with shield cells). There's something very addictive about two shotting shieldless Anacondas' power plants, and with the Vulture you don't have to worry about aiming when you can basically park on an Anaconda's rear end-- it's like docking a sidewinder on a large docking pad. I hop into HI CZs and surprisingly exhaust all of the large targets (pythons, clippers, dropships, and anacondas) before even losing 25-50% of my ammo. I usually have to drop out and come back in twice or three times before I run out of ammo. Of course, I save ammo by getting my targets down to 15% hull (if I can't drop their power plant first) and then giving them 350T of ramming love, sometimes at boost speed, with full power to shields.

The only problems I've experienced are:

1. Eagles are somewhat of a pain when killing them is barely worth more than the ammo spent to do so
2. I wing up with my buddies to bounty hunt but there's no advantage to splitting bounties when I can kill my targets just as fast by myself :]

Other than that, I can turn on a dime, I practically never lose shields compared to my decked out viper, and I can destroy just about any large NPC vessel within 15-30 seconds. I have about 30M in assets now but I'm not sure I want to sell this baby anymore, even for the Imperial Lamborghini :S

I think the Vulture is overpowered and for me at least the novelty of being able to destroy everything with ease takes the fun away. Even with class 3 pulse lasers it's a monster. I put mine away and am back in a Asp again. Combat is a lot more fun because you have to work for it. When it's too easy it feels like a grind and takes away my sense of purpose. I lost my incentive to play the game over the weekend. Jumped back in an Asp last night and am having fun again.

I agree with you. I feel like i have a easy button with my vulture.
