upgrading to windows 10 broke launcher - pls help

I am currently dealing with the dreaded situation of having an upgrade from windows 7 to windows 10 break my launcher: the play button activates for a few seconds but then returns to its dormant state without having launched the game.

I have a current ticket with FD support in an effort to solve this problem but we have not found a solution so far. Is there anyone out there who has faced this problem in the past and found a fix? If so can you post a reply detailing which steps you took?

Cheers

There is a procedure you can use to reinstall the game which is something you should do if you are changing OS.

It relatively painless and it worked for me when I couldn't log into the game at the launcher window.

The steps are listed in the FD site support section.

It may be as simple as reinstalling Microsoft .NET - which will be in the list of things to do on the Support page (been there, done that) I went through a period of a few weeks where each time firing up in pancake from VR called for a reinstall - fortunately the last couple of Oculus updates appear to have got over that issue!

I, too, upgraded recently 7 to 10. I did in the end have to totally reinstall the entire game, because although it worked, it was prone to not working!

This is the only time it's pretty much essential to make a copy of your bindings if you want to keep them, because the uninstall involves using Windows Progam Manager (Apps) to uninstall the launcher/game, and then to delete the folders in your App Data folder (Instructions are on FD Support pages).
I've been with W10 for a few weeks and you know what? It's absolutely fine.

Thanks for the replies -

I have been through 2 full reinstalls so far: one through the original FD launcher and one through steam. I did try to reinstall microsoft.NET files as per the support page a number of times, but unf not all the files worked(1 file hung in download and 1 resulted in a page-not-found message). FD support recommended different fix proceedures after not all the .NET file reinstalls worked, but in turn these new fixs did not work either. I tried switching off all 3rd party programs and did a clean reboot of my system but to no avail. In addition I have made a system diag scan for corruptions which proved negative. I'm currently waiting on FD support to see what my next step could be to fixing the problem.

I'm afraid my memory is a little hazy so take this with a pinch of salt, but my memory of upgrading to win10 - so I could use Windows Mixed Reality VR - was Elite wouldnt work, never mind in VR.

And that was a clean win10 install, I left my win7 alone. I believe it took doing a second install of win10 (perhaps the option of reistalling the OS only? Cant remember) before it worked properly.

So it's possible if you've done the upgrade from 7 to 10, you might try the reinstall win10 option which leaves your files intact but redoes the win 10 install?

(backup first!)

Yes - Had this too when I did a W10 install - there is a simple solution:

Run as administrator - just right-click the "EDLaunch.exe" file, properties, compatibility tab and tick the box "Run this program as an administrator".

Problem solved.

Don't run it as administrator. Check the permissions on the Frontier folder and subdirectories and make sure that you and any other account that runs it has full control.

Upgrading from Window 7 to 10 breaks all sorts of stuff - usually because the third party programs you installed under 7 are expecting to call locations in 7. You're better off wiping the hard drive first and doing a clean install of the OS, then re-installing everything.

Yeah... Clean install is always better.
If you just recently updated to win10, there are maybe a few updates it needs to install but doesn't automatically. Windows usually waits with updates until it's maximally intrusive to what you are doing at the moment. Best check the windows update function and see if there's anything to install.

There appears to be a few work arounds for this launcher bug (It's not your os or graphics drivers or anything else) another one I havn't seen yet (apologies if I missed it) is to right click on launcher, select properties and run in compatibility mode either as Win 7 or Win 8.1.
