Upgrading Video Card Advice

CMDRS,

Had my rift since Christmas and love it to death. I have a pretty solid machine, and I'm currently running with a GTX 780.
It does okay. I can run the rift with only minor stutters, but most of my settings need to remain med-low. Unfortunately, asteroids of any quantity are out.

I'm considering upgrading. At first, It was a no brainer to go for the GTX 970... but, apparently that is under a recall of sorts due to memory loss or something, dunno. Anyone using that card and seeing a sizable increase in quality? Anyone have a better option for around the same price range?

Cheers,
Wombat

You're talking ~15% faster than your 780 (at 4K) so if you get 40 fps average on the 780, you'll get 46 fps average on the 970. That's not worth paying for.

There's no single-card upgrade that is really worth it over your 780, and multi-card setups have their own issues. What it really comes down to is, are you willing to pay £500 or whatever that is in $USD for a 980, which will only be ~30% faster than your 780 and still likely won't give you the experience you want?

Tough choice really. I'd be more tempted to settle on lower settings with your 780 and try to wait it out until CV1, see what happens there. VR is moving *extremely* fast and accelerating right now so you probably don't have as long to wait as you think. If you haven't already overclocked your 780 I'd consider that as there is a lot of extra headroom in them.

add another 780.. I run 2 gtx670 power edition from MSI and i can run ultra with ease. I couldnt go into a RES with one card without some serious judder but with the additionn of the 2nd card, all is well. I have a peeny little cpu(i7 3820) oc'd to 4ghz and 16g of 1333 ddr3 xmp'd to 1600mhz. if your specs are equal to or greater than mine, a 2nd 780 will set you up
p.s. I get ZERO % of the reported SLi lag I've heard so much about.;)

Yes! MSI afterburner, EVGA precisionX or spmething like it will really help yer framerates. I have my 2 670's oc'd to 1260mhz core and 6840 on mem with TDP set to 114.

Hmm. What would make the biggest improvement for my money then? I have 8 core 4GHz AMD and 16 gigs of ram

Biggest improvement for the money would be another 780 in sli setup. Outside of dual 980's or expensive as hell single cards anyway. Performance would be crazy good in ED.

Despite the what some repeat, there's noticeable SLI latency.

I should clarify..I used to have sli latency issues. cant really pinpoint when it stopped. it was either the launch of 1.07 or the fact that I oc'd my rig but either way, it's gone now. an effective way to check for it is to look at your ship dashboard and rapidly rock your head side to side. if you see it teeter up and down like its catching up to your head movements AT ALL then you have it. I'm happy to report that I do not.

So, since I'm dumb. Let me start the question over... should I upgrade my 770 to a 970 or... is there a better option with the 780 because of the potential memory issues of the 970?

Well I went from a 770 to a single 970 which was certainly an improvement over the 770 but for me I still found I couldn't max the game out, so in went another 970 and now I'm finally happy with the graphic quality to performance ratio

I run dual 770's in SLI, for the money, it's, IMO, more powerful (ultra settings, no noticeable latency) than anything I could have got at that price point.

I'll probably go with a single 970, see how I like it, and then maybe grab another one. I think I'd need to upgrade my psu to run two, though... maybe even an extra cooling system?

Best to wait and see what the GDC throws out... There may well be some VR specific performance features revealed and it could be the case the only the NVIDIA 900 series can maximise them. AMD might also have a trick or two up their sleeve.

Good advice, I've heard the rumor mill churning lately nVidia is going to release news on a new card there, just rumor but, might be worth a wait. 990 anyone? :D
