Upload your own 3D models for your ships?

I wonder how feasible it would be to allow people to upload their own 3D models and use them as ships (from say Lighwave or something). I can see there would be problems around hard points etc but perhaps that could be addressed by some sort of intermediate tool that loaded in the 3D models and you could then place the hard points and declare the cargo capacity etc etc. From those properties the game could then scale the size of the vessel and its associated cost to build (thus giving you something to save for).

Crazy idea or would it add a richness and variety that ED would benefit from?

Hell no. Multitudes of problems with that, everyone would need to download 'YOUR' copy of the model, times that by how many thousands of people uploading their own, non compatible meshes. Takes months to set up a ship with all the technical work under the hood and also the style is set by their art director..the list goes on and on. Its never gonna happen.

This game would turn into the Team Fortress 2 hat factory game..no thx!

I've seen lightwave but not used it. What I'm getting at here are that the FDev models are fully designed, with all internals etc. That way when we get the ability to walk around the insides are already there.

Anything designed for the game would need to be to the same level.

Crazy idea. Unfeasible and it won't happen.

There is more to EDs ships than just a skin too.

As a Lightwave user I'd love to upload my own model. But without a lot of tech detail released from FD it wouldn't be compatible. Far too many issues for this to be feasible. They may allow modding in the future, but with the 'offline' mode gone I highly doubt it

Nice dream, ain't gonna happen.

My LW skills in action here (B5 fan must watch) :-

I predict that, even if the massive amount of technical issues could be overcome, it would take approximately 5 seconds before you saw the first flying phallus attempting to dock suggestively :p

Yeah, me too. I've used Lightwave for years and it would be cool to see some of my designs flying around in the game, but it's not going to happen. The parameters and special tools needed will not be made available any time soon, and as has been pointed out it could be single player only. It might come in the future when they aren't bothered with the game any more, but don't hold your breath. The models and designs in the game are pretty good anyway, some nice work and thought clearly went into them.

May be pretty complicated, I rather see here something like a periodic contests for best model and implement it later :)
That would be coooool, but not needed at all :p

Ok, fair enough. It was just an idea.

Nice idea, problems etc though.
Maybe, it could be a competition in the future to design a ship, then FD make the ship happen to the same standards as the rest etc.
Perhaps in a year's time..?

Multiple Commanders and Ironman, first, please!

It is a good idea. I would love to find a way for this to happen. Even more so, I would like to see the ability for people to submit 3D models for new station elements to be used as part of the procedural generation. But there needs to be a way to be sure of the quality of the models, and I'm sure FD would not have the resource to wade through the amount of likely submissions. Perhaps in the future some means of submitting models for peer review by other players prior to being presented to FD would make this more feasible. For ship designs, planet textures, cities and stations.

However would be a lot of work, and way way down the priority list.

Was it Eve or SC that ran a competition for ship models, with the best being included in game? I wish I could remember and find it, because the end result was very well done and was also very well documented for lore purposes :)

Hmm. Reminds me of SPORE, they have some creation tool kit. Wonder how many genital shaped ships with 5000t of cargo will be in-game if this is allowed :D

Who knows eventually ships from the mod community could be released officially by Frontier. However even if a lot of the (design and art) work is done by an external developer Frontier would still have to do quite a bit of work to get it in the game.
Star citizen's community competition for new ship designs delivered some excellent results, but then they are shooting for a much bigger collection of ships, because, well, they can...

A very good idea and hopefully as others have posted maybe a competition on the best designed ship and then FD develops it and puts it n game.

I don't even want to know where the hardpoints would be.
