Current situation:
Why not combine the two to make a better experience? Every month or so publish one of the 'X assassinated in location Y' stories (or similar), then actually add it into the game as a wreck POI. And put in lots of G5 materials / G5 data for people to find (and to make it worth a visit). Then next month remove that, and add another one.
This way:
- Galnet often has stories about ships being attacked and other events, but when we go there - nothing in the said location.
- Finding rare materials - once you get into the game you find out about the crashed anaconda, jameson, Dav's Hope etc for materials.

This way:
- People can't just go back year after year to one location, as it moves
- You can vary what is found at the location (you could even hint at what is there in the galnet - "While ferrying Military Supercapacitors to Meene, Senator Julian's ship was attacked by pirates ..."
- Now new people can find nice stuff
- And it's less repetitive
- And galnet starts to come alive
- And you can stop whenever it gets boring to code
