Or you could idk, check your radar, or comms panel.
Ctrl+B will give you a head's up long before you see anyone else. It will also give you a head's up on people entering a system so you know when to expect poor frame rates. Having said that, AI ships disappearing from super-cruise or juddering across space is another sure give away.
