well, more like a ship restoration yard.
At a basic level;
you could supply materials + half the normal cost and get a basic, not optional modules, no hard points ship.
Maybe even add special material/cargo needed for each type of ship, which you can salvage from ship wrecks.
A more interactive system;
Different space yards with a selection of different ships, in different need of repair. you look though what's on offer, put down a deposit and this opens up a function.
Now you have a wrecked ship 'bought', You then have a Status UI showing a requirement of needed part (kinda like the donation bar on engineers, but you would have a few, for different things)
Once that is all fulfilled, you pay the rest of the cash ('assembly cost') and the ship is yours. Making the ship only cost half the credits it would have, but you paid for that in time spent... Hers the cool thing. Now you can sell it at full price if you no longer need it, Profit.
This is just another way to get ships without the mission grind
or make money in a salvage based profession in ED.
(At some point, most player will have all the upgrades for their ships, then what do we do with materials? see above ;p)
Would be epic if;
This leave the door open for some more exotic purchases, older Cobra models , the krait, interplanetary shuttle
Maybe gaining reputation with the 'Restro-neers' Will reduce the credit cost of assembly...
Maybe the rare or 'out of' production ship can be sold back to one of these station and become a purchase option to visitors (not sure how that would work with instancing and such, double transaction my be a problem, maybe have an auction system to fix that), creating a player driven only aspect of the game. As the only way the older, out of production ships get into the game is by player repairing them , and or selling them to restoration station, which can then be bought by anyone, as a hefty premium ;0
Would also like to see any restored ships come with a free rusty/warn/patchwork pain skin option
