I built a smuggling cutter for BGS modification. A while ago I saw a Reddit post that said it was possible to use a class 5 shield generator if you modified it. Is this accurate? If so what modifications are needed? I have a class 5 prismatic I'm not using.

A c5 prismatic should be fine, I think a modified c5 A will work too.
If it needed any modification, it would need a secondary to increase maximum hull mass.

TL;DR easiest is to spam G1 thermal or reinforced.
You need an increase to ~8%/404t for optimal mass, which will equate to just over 1100 for max.

Reinforced is the easiest one.
You can also try G1 ELPS, but you'll need some distorted-whatchacalled for this, and these aren't that fast to get in loads.
I highly recommend any Cutter pilots that don't already have a modded class 5 shield to get one ASAP. You won't regret it.
Exactly. Last chance folks....they're about to become legacy-only, DO IT NOW. Or you will have to fly a type 9 (if you want shields) for that 750 plus cargo!!
You have to use a non-cutter to do the mod because it won't fit the size5 until AFTER you are done. I recommend you do reinforced5 for it because raw numbers help most against ramming, rails and plasma - your main threats as a cutter pilot.

Well, Sammarco did say in the last beta stream that they will look at the issue (presumably they will introduce a +10% optimal hull mass experimental), but it most likely won't be available until Chapter 2.
Some notes: Sandro did say they will look at this in the future, but I doubt we'll see anything in the first iteration of 3.0. Get it now or you'll have to wait a couple months.

I've just done this with a size 5 Prismatic and I have 2k shields with boosters! More than enough for a trade ship.
IMO they should package it with the +10% optimal multiplier since so often optimal mass and optimal multiplier came as a pair in secondaries, so if they want to keep this whole "make everything even more op instead of nerfing grandfathered items" route it would make sense to mirror this secondary pairing with their experimentals.
I currently have a prismatic g4 thermal resist that gives my cutter more raw MJ than a normal A6 prismatic, and I did not spend much time trying to get it. (I just rolled all the g4 rolls I happened to have when I was already at the base for other rolls)

And they definitely need to get on this BEFORE 3.0 drops, because this specific type of shield mod is currently NOT supported in the 3.0 version and thus can not be crafted from scratch using 3.0.
You will need a Grandfathered module from 2.4 that works in a #5 slot of the Cutter. This can be used in 3.0, but must never be converted.

Any class 5 shield will work, and it takes an 8% optimal mass boost. I have both 5a and 5d shields for my Cutter.

Mine showed to be +8% Optimal Mass during the roll, but when checking it in the outfitting screen, it showed 9.2% and fit the Cutter nicely.
So don't throw away those 8% rolls.
Take a break from the faction grind, you can't use a Cutter to engineer the shield anyway, you have to use a different ship. So go ahead and engineer a class 5 shield now, ASAP!
So EDDB tells me you can't get Class 5 Prismatic Shields anymore? That true?

You can get them anywhere they have the same sized normal shields in my experience, but you need to do the powerplay pledging stuff first.
I just bought a variety a few weeks ago.
Nothing has changed as far as I know but I also seem to recall them not being represented there.
