Newcomer / Intro Using a fuel scoop

Scooping is a great way to save money and it will save your life too if you're running out of fuel.
Best technique for me anyway is to go at full speed and spiral around the star. Don't get closer than seeing the edge of the sun in the corner of your cockpit window.
Don't let your temp get above 60 and you can fill your tank if you've gotten a good scoop, not the cheap one. Certain stars aren't scoopable, stick to the yellow and blue ones. I don't want to explain all the types, there are threads about it already. Maybe someone could tell you here, help please lol
Good Luck CMDR!

Scooping whilst flying around the sun/at the corona can be a bit dicey if you get it wrong.

The alternative method is to fly towards the star (centre its name in your target reticule) until the scoop activates, then drop throttle to 0 (although you are actually still flying forwards at 30km/sec - the lowest super cruise speed!).

You can speed-up a bit until the fuel is scooped faster, and then throttle to 0 again. Only speed-up a little, watch the flow rate increase to where you want it, then throttle down again.
Repeat until you can get a good rate of scooping without the temp going to 75+. Be careful about ship temperature!

I can get to 37 'units' scooping a second (whatever it is), and the temp stays at 63-65 until tank is full. I did buy a good 'A' rated scoop!

i have various scoop-equipped ships, and the rule of thumb i use is to scoop at around 65 - 75% of the scoop's max flow rate, which keeps the temp at around 63 - 65%. why? because there's often some clown NPC who interdicts me while i'm scooping, and this gives me plenty of temp overhead to either boost away or fight back. ymmv

Kilograms, I think.

I prefer scooping at zero throttle as well. Every scoop has a different "sweet spot" where you can scoop while idling along without the temperature rising (mine is at 325-350, with 62-65 % heat.) If you keep a tangential course, you're safe from getting accidentally closer. (The star's "thread" hanging down/raising up from the center if your sensor display.)

I do also scoop hitting the center point of the sun, throttle zero, stay between 65-75 heat
But also turn the front of my ship away from the sun when i'm interdicted I boost away from the sun

Good tip from Rudolphus, as remember you are still in super cruise!
And can be interdicted.
But the basics have been covered, buy a decent scoop, try to keep the heat down, dont go too fast- you`ll either hit the sun (its hot) or sling shot out and have to go back in.
If you have "rings enabled", you`ll see the suns outline, this is the crash point and you`ll get more heat the closer you are..

Where it does not look like you are dying fast, your sub systems are being fried from the inside...
if you have take any heat damage, once docked go look in the repairs and bring up the sub menu, depending on when (if you have ever) done this, the bill may be small or very large... its the same for being dragged out of super cruise.. system damage (repair bill).

Fly safe out there, not too close to the sun...

I "dive" under, and find the sweet spot under the star. Seems to me to be slightly faster than the move-in-to-the-center method, and also strikes me as safer. But, whatever works.
