Using a Touchscreen to interact with the game

My first attempts at creating a few screens to "touch".

I know a lot of players have the buttons already mapped to their HOTAS. Or just use the Keyboard.

I had a Touchscreen doing nothing, and thought, what the hell .....

Login, Starport & Stellar Cartography are done (can't post any more screenshots, my quota has been reached).

Comms, Helm and Operations to do.

Outstanding

With all the Virtual Reality bits and bobs and this being a PC game I am really surprised touch screens havent been given as much attention.

Well done!

Thanks everyone.

I have used the TB software for a couple of years now (this allows the profiles to work with the PC). Considering there have been no updates to the software since 2006 (its creator burned out), it still does a good job. I use the screen in Client/Server mode (using a cheap Laptop to run as Client). Therefor no overheads.

My Touchscreen is a 10" Mimo.

If there was ever a game TB & Touchscreens were made for. ED & SC are them.

nice, but really ST; could you not have made it look more eliteish.......

LCARS. Functional, practical. But simple to create, for a man of no talent (me). However, give it time, and I will try to make it a bit more Elite-ish.

For now it works. I test each screen as I progress. Touchscreens come in handy if you are playing in the quiet hours, and cannot use VA or similar.

Stellar Cartography. I didn't mention this, but all the "buttons" that can be pressed on the touchscreen are animated.

Last two. But profiles always get added to and/or tweaked:

Bridge (Tactical):

Last two (but will be continuously added to and/or tweaked)

Comms (Keyboard there if needed):

They look really nice screens, reminds me of my olden days when I developed VBX controls for startrek look in VB 3. oh they were the good years.

I'm not a touchpad type of person, don't own one or ever used one. so apologies if this is a dumb question.

How is the touchpad linked into the game? e.g. does tapping boost on the pad, boost the craft in the game?

i have Boost setup as a "Hold Button". This is animated. Press Boost (colour on the button changes). Button stays down for 5 secs. Then resets itself ready for the next go.

i've used the Touchbuddy (primarily for Touchscreens, but can be run on the local machine, and the profiles used on a 2nd monitor) since 2006! More here: http://www.touch-buddy.com/forums

i run a 10" Touchscreen in Server (Game PC). And Client (cheap Laptop to take the CPU hit). I press a button on the Touchscreen, and it's sent to the Games machine.

Desrat has recently written "Touchdown" which works over the web (iPhones, Pads etc.) I don't use this myself. But worth a look if interested. He can convert TB profiles to run on Touchdown too. More here: http://desratsworld.co.uk/TouchDown/

ARe these designs or is this something that actually works? Either way, Good Job!

Evening Ben. Every screen is fully functioning with the game. Most switches are animated. For example Touching (pressing) the Cargo Scoop Toggle Switch puts it in the "On" position.

Example of the switches in use. Hope this explains what the animated switches/buttons do:

The Starport, Login, Engineering buttons navigate you to those particular screens (Tabs). These appear on every screen so you can navigate to whichever Tab you want.

Landing Gear Lever Up (Gear Retracted) - This is a Toggle and will remain this way unless selected again to deploy gear.
System Panel Selected - This is a Toggle and will remain this way unless selected again to turn the System Panel Off
Lights On - This is a Toggle and will remain this way unless selected again to turn the lights off
Master Arm (Hardpoints Deployed) - This is a Toggle and will remain this way unless selected to secure the weapons/hardpoints
Flight Assist On (Default) - This is a Toggle and will remain this way unless selected to turn Flight Assist Off
Select Next Hostile Pushed (Touched) and is Selected - This is a "Hold" - Button will remain in the "Next Hostile State" for 2 seconds, then return to its default. However, the "Next Hostile" Keystroke is sent to the game. Done this way so it resets automatically.
Cargo Scoop On - This is a Toggle and will remain this way unless selected to retract the scoop
BOOST On - This is a "Hold" - Button. Switch will remain up until your BOOST completes, then reset to its default state ready for the next go ....
