Using controller and hotas

The issue I have with elite on the PlayStation is I can’t use a controller and the hotas at the same time, usually not to bothered by that as I can fly the ship and navigate the menus fine with the hotas, but with the odyssey update on the way I’d like to use the controller for the space legs part while still using the hotas to fly. Hope there is a fix for this.

I think it's due to how the PlayStation manages controllers. One active controller at a time per player logged into that console.

What you can do is use something like a Cronus Zen or Titan Two with a wired controller and your hotas. It'd take some scripting so the two aren't stepping on each other, but it's probably doable. Plus, it'd let you ditch the crappy TM HOTAS and use a higher quality PC hotas.

Agree and it's a thought I've had too. They need to find a way to implement multiple controller support.

Are you sure this is correct? I'm currently using 3 controllers at once on my PlayStation - Controller, HOTAS, G29 Wheel - without the need for expensive third party hardware. All 3 are responding to my inputs simultaneously without disconnecting the other. So it doesn't appear, at least to me, that 'PlayStation only allows once active controller at a time'.

Having only 2 arms/hands most humans can only use one at a time. How many arms you have cmdr?

That reminds me, in Mudrunner I could drive with my G29 at the same time as changing camera angles with the DS analog sticks. (it can be done... with 2 hands... just)

So it seems there's absolutely no reason we can't use a HOTAS and Controller for Odyssey. That's if FDev make the choice to implement and support it...

We have the same issue on Xbox as well. We need to have a controller set up to plug in our headsets, but we can't use the controller for anything else in game while using the HOTAS. The way things currently are we could probably switch to the controller by disconnecting the HOTAS then the game will give a "reconnect controller prompt" and we just hit A on controller. However, to switch back to the HOTAS we'd have to turn off the controller to do a reconnect controller with the HOTAS, but sometimes the mic. will stop working when the HOTAS is recognized as the primary controller and the headset controller is not on already.

Ugh. That makes me less confident it will be fixed on Xbox, Squadrons on Xbox is also only one at a time, HOTAS or controller. Makes me think the way Xbox handles multiple controllers is part of the problem.

I've submitted a question about this for Thursday's live stream. Feel free to like the post or post your own version of the question in that thread. The more people express interest the more likely we will receive an answer.

Done.

I'm hoping Frontier will address this for Odyssey.

Wow! Are you using all those controllers in Elite Dangerous at the same time? If so, I want to know how. I have the TM HOTAS and, like the OP, can only use the TM HOTAS or a controller at one time in E D.

The PlayStation supports multiple controllers at the same time. Elite Dangerous console edition does not support it.

We're hoping that as part of Odyssey development Frontier will have shown a little love to the console Commanders, and updated the game such that it supports multiple controller input at the same time, as other games do (e.g. Mudrunner).

And keyboards should only have ten buttons because how many fingers do you have cmdr? Come on man, I've seen your posts, half the time I may disagree but I know you're smarter than that.

Go try out War Thunder and then come back to Elite, man does it elevate the internal salt levels of a person such as myself who desperately tries to like Elite. WT has crossplay, KBAM support on consoles, you can map each DS4 motion sensor axis individually for pitch/yaw/roll, etc. Sure, Gaijin aren't without their faults but man, they went the whole nine yards on that game as far as interfaces go. There are multiple screenfuls of settings you can tweak. Even on console! Imagine not getting treated like casuals who only understand D-pad and two big red buttons named A and B!
