Using DK2 as ONLY viewpoint and TURNING OFF monitor a necessity for best performance?

EVERY time I turn the monitor off to ONLY use my dk2 as main/primary/only the desktop and screen has a really weird affect and is so hard to look at. YOu have to wink and it is hard, but semi manageable, to move windows around and load up the game or use Nvidia Control Panel. It's all quite trippy.

1 - Can I remedy this weird affect in the DK2 by lowering the resolution of my main monitor down so that i can get it also to 75 hz?

2 - Many people on these forums suggest that By using my DK2 as the ONLY thing active and completely shutting down my monitor that I will get the best performance and less judder etc. Is this a fact? I am running a powerful rig ...new comp with superclocked gforce 980 gtx and in extended mode with my monitor as main and DK2 as secondary it STILL works really really well in Elite Dangerous etc. But if going MAIN with my DK2 will fix judder in asteroid fields with 25 + npcs I'll figure out how to do it. THoughts?

no it will not make any difference with my tests on 290x fps wise i got less performance and visually i could not tell any difference either.

Makes a difference on my laptop AND my SLI rig, but I suspect for two very different reasons. The proof is in the pudding... Either it improves performance or it doesn't. :)

I noticed a slight increase when just using the dk2, just start the game via my monitor, switch the dk2 on, and my 2 monitors auto stand by.

I use to play on my main monitor until it recently died. It was capable of 75Hz at 1280x1024 ( panel is 2560x1440 ), so i'd set up the Rift and E:D so that the main monitor would display my desktop at 75Hz and the game on the Rift (extended mode). This seemed to work fine, no stutters while moving you head (beyond known game issues), though the desktop was displayed at a weird aspect ratio. So in answer to your first question yes you can do that and it *should* not affect performance.

Having had to switch to a back up monitor that cannot achieve 75Hz at any resolution i've now switched over to disabling the main monitor whilst using the rift, this was vital in terms of ensuring low persistence and smooth head motion. If I left the monitor active i'd only get 60Hz on the Rift and for me that was unacceptable. Its impossible to say whether this also helped improve performance, beyond avoiding being capped by refresh rate to 60Hz. So in answer to your second question its unproven, but worth testing if you feel up to it.

Finally if you stick with disabling a monitor then in Win 7 and Win 8 you can use 'Windows+P' keys to activate 'Project' (Project to a screen) dialog/panel. This provides four options primary, extended, duplicate, secondary. You can move through these via cursor keys and use enter/return to select the highlighted one. This will allow you to switch the active display between the main monitor and the rift relatively easily (can be done by squinting with one eye looking at the rift). You just choose either primary or secondary screen to switch between them, which depends upon how you've set up the rift and which screen you are currently watching.
