Using ED for training for Star Wars: Squadrons ?

What do you think, worthwhile using Flight assist OFF/ON for training for SWS ?

This is me bumbling around using Flight Assist OFF & ON in Elite Dangerous in VR. The first in my new series of training for Star Wars: Squadrons and then cross-play with 'real' people.

Sorry about the video quality :-( Won't use that video editing encrypting software again !

Looking forward to Star Wars: Squadrons, especially the cross play, with my PSVR mates. Hit subscribe and leave some comments if you like it and would like to see more.

Do you people actually expect a flight sim from EA with more than a skin deep gameplay? That game has to appeal to as wide of an audience as you can imagine. One could say with confidence flying mechanics will be about as sophisticated as driving is in their racing games.

I normally would agree 100% But check out the first video and let me know what you think. I maybe wrong, but I hope not ;-)
Single player trailer, mainly cut-scenes and theatrics but check out the 'flight assist OFF' game play around 2:25 min in :)

I’d say playing CQC with Flight Assist On would probably be better ‘training’ for SW:S - everything I’ve seen so far points to that flight model with the ‘drift’ bits being special actions that you can trigger.

There looks to be a choice of abilities you can apply to your fighter, the FAOff-alike being one of them.

Edit: power management is another similarity, though ED copied that from the 90’s X-Wing games anyway :)

Part of why I got Elite was to check if I could handle crazy starfighter maneuvers in VR or if that would make me nauseous. So far, even with flight assist off, I've had no issues apart from once where the headset got desynced and the head movement didn't match ingame.

So it's not so much training for Squadrons as it's trying to see if I can handle it. I expect there to be a lot of crossed wires with controls once I play both, though, but that's to be expected. I do plan on putting the most important buttons on the same buttons if at all possible.

I have to agree with Caramel Clown on this one, having played a number of EA racing games in the past. Realistic physics have never even been attempted in their games so I don't think they will change their stance now just for this title. Having said that, the low price point is a good incentive for people to buy and try it anyway.

I extremely excited for Squadrons. Listening to the developer interviews they went back to the X-Wing games for inspiration and are also Elite Dangerous players.

I’m excited to try it in VR, but hoping that they will also use TrackIR. That’s not confirmed yet is it?

Hopefully TrackIR, But I don't use that so don't know for sure or not. I'll be playing in VR mostly so head tracking (y). I guess playing in VR (or head tracking) will give people an advantage over flatscreen :)

Maybe a little advantage with spatial awareness. I do have a Rift that I use occasionally in Elite. I think that the higher res monitor with Track IR can be better for the graphics and distance drawing. I'm certainly going to try VR in squardons. Who hasn't dreamt of this since playing X-WING!

Dreaming now about using a HP G2 in ED and SWS, time to start saving :) Looking forward to the weekend with SWS.

I also think CQC with FA on is the best option, the only caveat is the FA off trigger that re-engaging upon releasing the button (I used to fly like this in Elite) to emulate drifting.

Shame I won't be able to play it on release day, I already sold my Rift CV1 and on a Reverb G2 preorder (that hopefully ships early November as I was relatively an early bird).

That’s odd - I got the prompt to press a certain button to recenter to view, firstly when switching to VR mode and again when entering the cockpit.

Back OT: the flight model feels virtually identical to FAon with roll-into-yaw. Power management is pretty much identical too.

No prompt for me to recenter, using SteamVR and it crashes after I finish (probably something else). Also launching via Oculus Link to be wired, might try old fashion Virtual Desktop and compare visuals and see if SteamVR still crashes. Great game, much better detail than I thought, no motion sickness, turned off all the comfort options

I was soooo wrong about flight assist OFF in ED with SWS, the 'Drift' in SWS is way quicker than FA OFF in ED ! See below ;-)

(I know, wrong forum)

A basic introduction to Start Wars Squadrons flight controls in a practice session.

And what not to do tailing a Raider ! :)

More to come with my PSVR mates in cross-play !
