Using Galnet and local station news

I know Galnet isn't quite where it needs to be at the moment, but I do wonder about the other news "sources" in the game. I'm talking about the local station news channels that report on different faction events and what not. The sort that talk about expansions, civil wars and sometimes even little stories of interest. Does anybody deep dive into these stories or make use of them in anyway?

From my point of view, I'm rarely in any station long enough to develop an affinity with it. The most I pay attention to factions is in the mission and passenger boards so that I can get bigger payouts. I do recall David Braben mentioning in an interview that players haven't uncovered all the mission types currently in-game, and I'm wondering if I've been gliding too fast over these little details and missing a whole new aspect of ED? I'm curious to see how other people use that information to enrich their game, if at all.

I generally only pay attention to those news feeds if it's one of my home ports. A lot of hidden gems buried in those station channels, the presentation is really poor, I'd say the bulk of players don't even bother checking them.

I started looking into the local news. But without some idea what to do with the info, didn't make the side trip to find out.

One recent was about possible boom in a settlement. Might just go and check it out.

you don't want to have a long and active friendlist when checking those news, since the list will always jump back to the top when someone comes online :(

really, another underdeveloped feature

Totally agree. I feel like so much more could be done to make you feel like part of a station's community. It could be a microcosm of unique characters, missions, and events that would give the game so much more life.

i fear, even the anounced galnet-audio wont help much if i need to manually select the entries i want to listen to,
or have to stay in the same instance for the duration of the article

I once went looking for a lost pilot that was reported missing in the Maia Herald or whatever its called. Spent the whole evening retracing his movements, found a LP with a message from him but could get any further so decided to look it up...cannon had found his crashed ship 6 months earlier.

1) The faction status is useful as it's more detailed than the system map so you can see pending states (if you do BGS stuff).
2) The scrolling is soooo annoying - how can they not have fixed that?
3) Interesting information are apparently always hidden in 'Herald', articles, so you can ignore the others. Heralds are being collected, slowly

Needs some kind of 'hey, it's worth reading' indicator, just like Galnet, though I guess that breaks immersion...

When I first started playing I looked at them several times and it was always just a blurb telling me that a faction was going into boom/war/famine/etc. which is pretty useless info considering that you can see all that right in the info panel. After realizing that, I pretty much quit looking at them all together to be honest.

It's a neat thing for roleplay/immersion, though, so I don't think they need to go away.

The only "article" I actually do frequently view is the traffic report.

I think presentation is quite nice atm, people choose to ignore BGS and what's going on in systems, they don't even know what kind of states spawn what kind of situations and missions LOL.

When the majority of people have no idea it is being presented at all, its clearly not presented 'quite nice'.

Galnet is nice for reading in-flight on long passages in VR and it even plays some nice music. And next year, we even get Galnet Audio ;)

[SUB](admitting it took me nearly 2 years to find it under "Galaxy Powers" on left tab)[/SUB]

Players were supposed to fill in these blanks, but it all fell apart for various reasons and a very healthy dose of mis-management.
Noone knows what will come after the current "redesign" (which might as well be a simple "we've pulled all non-critical resources from this project until further notice") of the Player News Submission System.

The Braben interview AFAIK is widely regarded as a simple misunderstanding or internal communication error.
I think the Mission type he talked about wasn't implemented at the time and later was found to be just as generic and no different as all existing Missions.
(it's too long ago, so this is just how I remember it roughly being)

The Herald is buried away amongst a bunch of stats. Am willing to bet most newbies and a fair few experienced cmdrs are unaware of the Herald. The whole thing could definitely be presented better.

But they do know they can interact with that middle part of the screen right?

Sorry, I am just not buying this. Can it be improved? Everything can be, some maybe animated banner might help to attract attention. But I won't buy it is a problem to discover news sources in game unless you willingly ignore it. Which I am ready to bet on cold beer most of people complaining of not knowing anything do.

As for missions, ED 1.0 mission system was a bit mess and went trough several rewrites till Horizons launched. There were mission templates that were bugged unfortunately and were turned off. So I suspect David talked some of those mission types. I hope they will return along with more detailed missions as FD improves mission system even more (it is way better than it was at 1.0 at this point).

Can it be improved? Everything can be,.

Which is exactly my point, the implementation is poor. It can be improved, am sure the devs will eventually look into it. The UI is slowly evolving, has come a long way since the early day's, still a lot more needs to be done. Scrolling through traffic reports/bounty reports etc etc just to get to the local news is not good design in my opinion, keep them separate.

Could you explain how implementation is poor, what is missing there?

Are we talking about the same thing? The articles below the stats, it is the most basic implementation anyone could have came up with, looks like a bunch of text messages. Nothing at all that would attract a user or make them want to scroll through that screen. The stories and news features are buried away.
