We have branching missions, what if each day commanders were given a special, non-repeatable mission that from its outcome drives a personal narrative?
Example:
Players get a mission to smuggle cargo, but also get a message from the security services. Depending on what you choose to do, the next day another 'special' mission pops up? And from that, another. You already have persistent characters in stations, these could be your handlers, victims, opponents etc.
As time goes on, you could build an quite interesting story arc as you doublecross, kill, smuggle etc, or try to redeem yourself. The best thing is it could go on as long as you want it to.
It could start off small with supply runs, building up to interesting moral choices.
