Using Mechs to Add New Game Loops in Odyssey

What interesting game loops could be had in Odyssey if a sealed man-sized mech suit was introduced? Below is a list of different types of game loops that could leverage the existing mechanics in Odyssey while adding new layers of strategy and immersion.

1. Combat Enhancements
  • Ground Combat: Mech suits could provide enhanced armor, firepower, and mobility, making them ideal for high-risk combat zones. Players could engage in battles against other mech pilots or infantry, creating a dynamic battlefield.
  • Specialized Roles: Mechs could be equipped with unique loadouts, such as heavy artillery for area suppression or EMP weapons to disable enemy shields and electronics.

2. Exploration and Resource Gathering
  • Hazardous Environments: Mechs could allow players to explore extreme environments, such as high-radiation zones or planets with toxic atmospheres, expanding the range of explorable locations.
  • Mining Operations: Mechs could be outfitted with specialized tools for mining rare resources, adding a new layer to the resource-gathering loop.

3. Engineering and Customization
  • Upgrades and Mods: Players could collect materials to upgrade their mech suits, similar to the engineering system for ships and weapons. This could include enhancements like increased mobility, better energy efficiency, or advanced targeting systems.
  • Aesthetic Customization: Players could personalize their mech suits with unique paint jobs, decals, and cosmetic upgrades.

4. Logistics and Support
  • Transport Missions: Mechs could be used for carrying heavy cargo or assisting in construction projects, adding a new dimension to mission types.
  • Repair and Rescue: Mechs could serve as mobile repair units or be used in rescue missions to extract stranded players or NPCs from dangerous situations.

5. PvP and Competitive Modes
  • Mech Arenas: Dedicated PvP arenas for mech battles could be introduced, offering a new competitive game mode.
  • Team-Based Objectives: Players could form squads of mech pilots to complete objectives, such as capturing bases or defending key locations.

6. Narrative and Story Integration
  • Faction Missions: Mechs could be tied to specific factions, with unique missions and storylines that explore their development and strategic importance.
  • Alien Encounters: Mechs could play a role in encounters with Thargoids or Guardians, offering new challenges and opportunities for collaboration or conflict.

7. Economy and Trade
  • Mech Manufacturing: Players could invest in the production and trade of mech suits, creating a new economic loop within the game.
  • Black Market: Rare or illegal mech components could be traded on the black market, adding a layer of risk and reward.

These loops could seamlessly integrate with Odyssey's existing mechanics, such as on-foot exploration, ship-based gameplay, and the engineering system, while introducing fresh challenges and opportunities for players.

I take it that a sealed man sized mech suit is a remote controlled suit run by telepresence much like the SLF?

The problem is that none of those things exist for your mech suits to take advantage of. There are no hazardous ground environments, the "sphere of combat" is more like a limp balloon, there is no ground mining (and what ground mining installations I used to see I haven't found in an age), there are no ground transport or support mechanics. The other stuff I disagree with.

We could've had those things of course but instead we got awesome stuff like PMFs, squads and now Colonisation.

What's the purpose of adding combat mech suits when ordinary suits have shields, can be engineered, can work as mobile weapon platform deadly enough to threaten ships (just see what happens to ship shields and hull when bunch of scavs takes ship as their target)? All purposes I can think of which mech could do in combat are already fulfilled by footman troopers while latter ones are much smaller targets.
What I think we need more is hoover type SRV that would perform the same role as old SRV just more focused on exploration than combat (single gun, lower shields and armor). This is where I think idea of mech could be implemented too- a human shaped SRV walking/running slower than SRV but more capable to handle high slopes and rough terrain with flight mode which would be simply hoovering ability. Just think of larger scale non-combat iron man suit.
