Using Mines as Bombs

Is it possible to use mines as Bombs on planetary surfaces. Imagine going straight up from a station ( lets say 5km - so ouzt of range for its turrets ) and then set loose your mines....
Has anyone tried this.

I think it might have been tried commonly if mines currently had any combat merit. As it stands they have acceptable hull damage, useless shield damage and are easy to not be hit by. And planetary combat isn't a frequent thing.

BUT...

In the name of "Science"...

Buying another AspE tonight anyway, might make it first task to buy 6 mine launchers and see if this works ;)

Well stations don't have shields and mines should make splash damage so .... please let me know the outcome of your experiment.

Someone may answer this question before I get the chance, but if not I promise that I'll give it a run. With footage if possible.

Conceptually...destroying a station with a bombing run of 4 Fed Gunships with 7 mine launchers has suddenly piqued my interest ;)

Which brings forth question.. What if you dropped those mines on landing pads on planet...

You mean waiting for ships to land and then boom?

If actually 2.1 arrives ( and brings station defenses in the way of ships ) it might be a viable and interesting tactic instead of an exploit. In that case you might want to arm your Gunships with some defensive weaponry and escort them with a couple of dedicated fighters.
Me like that idea very much.

Seems a bit like griefing to me. Unless of course 2.1 offers missions to blockade a station...

My long and joyful experience over multitude of games with PvP has led me first and foremost ask myself when anything is proposed..

1) How this can be abused
2) How this can be used to grief

Because then I at least know what things there are to expect in game.

But then couldn't you just drop mines in the slot of a space station? (Or on the pads of outposts). However I am not likely to further explore this possibility. Much rather use them as Bombs to fulfill missions

You could. But I think they would just float there. Of course if people would not notice them while going in/out it would work (and I guess a lot of people would not).
Observant might notice pad on outpost being trapped and bail out though. If you mined the slot on busy station anyone wanting out would be screwed though with timer ticking down to annihilation.

Using them on planets with gravity pulling them down would make them slightly more certain to hit if you could get timing right.

You'll have mines floating statiionary 5km above the Station.
Gravity hasn't been scripted into Mines yet.

If you place the launcher <30m above the ground, you can even place Mines below the Planet's surface ;)

Don't know if V2.1 will address that issue, though. Could be, then this might work - provided it's a high-G Planet, pulling the Mines down fast enough to cover the distance before they self-destruct.
