Using normal account with VR

I have a question.
My friend bought a Vive and I want to show him Elite. Is it possible to install it on his computer, log in with my account and play it?

Or do VR sets have separate instalation, hence the need to buy Elite via their store in order to play it?

Does the Vive not work through steam VR? It installed on my machine automatically, my rig doesn't even do vr!

I don't know. I don't have neither Steam nor VR, myself. That's why asked here. Maybe someone will have some experience with getting a "normal" Elite account work in VR.

That said, you will need steam VR installed I think...

I don't think so...

I don't have steam at all, just run the game (bought and downloaded from Frontier store) directly on my PC and it works fine with VR (Oculus, not Vive), but I presume it will run fine on the Vive too.

I need the Oculus software for the rift to work, but that is all.

it's simple.

Set unknown sources to on in the oculus general settings.

Start Elite, go to graphics and set 3d option HMD, use the rift to find the graphics apply option, a tad annoying since you only have 15 seconds.

Another option is to use the profiler tool to activate VR.

For vive you just have to find the ingame option to activate VR, there is no "unknown sources" lock out.

You could probably start it in VR with the drkaii profiler tool. Though vive might require steamVR I don't know as I have oculus.

Might be able to get the demo too, just download the launcher from the frontier website and not log in. Play the training missions.

You can generate a steam key on the frontier website, but then steam gets a kickback every time you buy something from the frontier store. Use your own steam account obviously.

If be wants it in steam he can log into the frontier store and find his key there.
then activate that in steam.

Buying it again will only make him a second account, which is cool and all but nescesserillay not what he wants.

But he doesn't need to have it in steam to use the vive.
Just run steamvr and apply the 3d setting to hmd.
Dr.kaaii's profile tool is a great little application that would ease switching between regular screen or the vive at just a few clicks and is free.

Yes you can install it on his computer and log into your account to play it.

Don't worry about Steam and all that. As he owns the Vive he should already have all that setup. Before you can go into VR with Elite, start it up and switch the 3D option to HMD Headphones. Quit out and then restart it with Steam VR running in the background.
