I have seen a lot of posts about Commander naming...

@Ashley
Didn't David say that there could be multi commanders with the same because the ID is down to the account rather commander's name... so although we a reserving a commander now, we could start another alt commander with the same name?

sorry if i'am wrong here the videos were rewatched over and over during late night chats on KS biting finger nails

I don't think this is an element that has been set in stone yet, so I can't confirm that for you I'm afraid.

Do you mean multiple commanders with the same name or alt commanders per account, or indeed both?

It seems that a lot of people are going for fictional names or nicknames, does anyone intend to use their real full name for their commander name?

As it looks like you get one shot at this, unless of course you buy another account!

Nah, Just a combination of my first name and my wife's first name. I know, more cheesy than gorgonzola, but hopefully it's unique

In a word... No - I never use my real name in an online game. Given all the fun conversations on here about Griefing and how it's going to be stopped - I don't want any legitimate presence on the internet "attacked" by a frustrated Script Kiddie when he can't rile me in game....

yeah, this is my way of thinking too... i have always used a nickname but for ED i was tempted to use my real full name

I wish I wasn't so indecisive. Every time I think I've decided which way to jump on the whole Commander name thing, up pops another thread and plants the seeds of doubt again. My poor character has had more changes of identity than Dr. Sam Beckett.

Maybe that's what I should call him? ;)

Some people like anonymity, some don't. I've never liked it because I'm vain and if I do something cool I want people to know it's me. It works the other way too, of course.

Games are a bit different because of the roleplaying aspect. But Elite is a game in which I feel like I can play myself, or at least myself as I would like to think I would act in that universe.

And with names like Jameson in the canon, a 20th-century name is not out of place.

Are commander names to be reserved as a whole, or locked by surname? Example: if I choose to be Commander Bloggs, someone else could choose (and be accepted) as Commander Joe Bloggs, correct?

Not sure why, but nicknames to me feel a bit immature... I normally don't mind for Gamertags and other games, but with Elite: Dangerous I think it deserves better

This why I am undecided and can't choose between a nickname or real name, I wouldn't consider a fictional name as favourite characters from TV Shows or Films come and go, at least for me

I've gone with my favourite fictional TV character as my commander and my real name as a NPC in the game. It sounds like the wrong way round but as a life long fan, I wanted my name in the game somewhere, and I liked the idea of a virtual me just out there... probably getting shot at.

+1,
I’m only using my real name for the planet, station and NPC, Commander Name is different.

I hope no one is monitoring the backers app, over the last 24 hours I changed my name about 20 times (between about four different names)

I am using my daughter's full name for the NPC (i really hope they don't do this slice and mix idea)

No, I'm using a nickname. I know the Elite tradition is to use "real" names, like Jameson, but I don't feel it's natural to follow that tradition. I like my nickname better in a game.

However, if I don't get it approved because someone else grabbed it, then I may use my own name. I'll deal with that if/when the situation arise.

I want not use my own name. I'll use a name, which sounds a bit more "international", than my own. It's, if you want so, a fictional "real" full name.:D

I think I'll use my real name for the NPC, struggling with the Commander option.
Commander Big Nick is kind of naff, BalooNick I don't like anymore, could use my grandfathers surname of Shannon but that might be too popular.

Do we get stuck with our choices or will they be optional once we start the game? If at the start of a game I choose a name reserved by another player, will I get told 'Try Again'?

I always use my nick for online games, just a habit.
Although I have put in my dad's full name for the NPC choice.

I've used my surname only for my commander name. Hopefully it's rare enough to be unique among the 25,000. So if anyone nefarious tries to track me (seems unlikely, although I do keep hearing helicopters...), they'll have to do some serious detective work.
