Using Steam as a login platform

Steam is down for a great many of us today, which means we can't login and play. Is there a way to get around this, or are we stuck out in the cold?

IF you happen to buy ED from Steam prior to April 25 this year, than you can go to the Frontier store and download the Frontier launcher. If you bought ED after April 25, your out of luck.

That's actually not cool. Is it even possible to still buy the standalone version?
Yep, two days ago I quit steam and bought a digital copy from Frontier. Everything I had accomplished during my time with steam, carried over to my new partnership with Frontier. I lost nothing in the process except for the time it took to download and install.

Can you use the same character or will I have to start all over again? If I start all over again, it's not worth it.
BASICALY if you purchased this game before april 25th you can login at either steam or frontier's web site and play on either
here is the download link taken from frontiers web page http://hosting.zaonce.net/elite/Client-Installer.exe
which will work if you bought the game from steam before april 25 if you bought it from steam after this date however your version will only work with steam period.

so for eg if you bought it before april 25 you can get rid of the steam version(uninstall) install the frontier version and carry on playing from where you last logged off as if nothing happened...………………...
your commander will be intact and all asset, money ,rank.permits and ships ect intact and ready to go
if you bought it after that date(APRIL 25) and no longer wish to play via steam and wish to play direct via frontier you will need a new commander and you will start from the very beginning as far as I am aware
(updated not strictly true see below)

I pretty much agree with what you state except for "you will need a new commander and you will start from the very begining". I personal just switched to frontier's version of a launcher three days ago and maintained everything such cr's, ships, etc etc etc. Though I did utilize the same exact name and password on both accounts prior to quitting steam. Unless having the same exact login and password is the answer, how was I able to maintain everything?

yes if you use exact same login details I presume that where you now have a valid login slot with frontier that you paid for after april 25th
and used the exact same login details as the old steam login slot its just revalidated your old account to work via the frontier launcher direct
so using the exact same details it appears will save your bacon so to speak(taking your word for it and it does sound entirely possible tbh)
if you used a different login and password however you would have had to start from the very beginning
the only disadvantage of doing that is you could have had two separate accounts but you have used your newly purchased login slot on an exisiting already paid for account
effectively cancelling the new account out as it has now merged with your old account id

I was prepared to start all over again from scratch, when the game started up using the Frontier launcher and I saw that nothing had been changed, that I had maintained everything, I let out a WHOOPY so loud my wife got interested. And asked me why I was dancing around like a little school girl who just had her first ballerina lesson.

so many hours saved of course that was worth it :D (hope your 1 less connection via steam pans out connection wise amigo)
on that front personally if I had the cash I would try a paid for good gaming vpn, most of them have a free trial period that may be worth looking into to help improve your situation on the connection front if you can afford it and if it makes a worthwhile difference after a free trial. think of it as a traffick free toll fee motorway, of course the car does not go faster than it can but it gets there quicker cause there's no(far less) traffick congestion
still that can become irrelevant if the final road to your house is flooded and impassable

I've only bought it about a month ago, so the whole before April whatever is irrelevant. The launcher that comes steam seems to have 2 modes. One that you can start from the Library section, and one that starts from the downloads screen, after a patch download has happened.

The one that starts from the Library is already logged in, and the other asks for a login via Frontier or Steam. The Steam login doesn't seem to work. Just seems like a waste of resources to login through Steam if they still have most of the player base logging in on Frontier servers. Really doesn't seem like a smart move, but I'm sure it makes sense to someone.

Anyway, I'm not paying for another version just yet. Maybe when I have $60 to throw at it, sure, but money's tight right now.

sorry I dont use the steam version so don't know how that works
but I would suggest from what I do know is you say the library version is already logged in try loggin out of that and in that same section try the file validator or words to that effect...…...
steam has never hosted elite dangerous you can however download the game files from them
elite dangerous is acctually hosted on frontier developments rented servers provided by amazon ecs web services from home base in Ireland around the world
steam just auto boots the frontier launcher as far as I am aware ( hence in the launcher itself steam is not even mentioned as this is frontiers turf so to speak)

I don't see your beef - just launch from the library or a desktop shortcut.

If trying to select "play" on the downloads view after a download gives you an error then raise a ticket with F D or complain to Steam - or just don't click that.

The original issue of not being able to launch direct from a EDLaunch.exe file has been explained. Personally I think it stinks that Steam purchases are now "no CD-Key" and so you are locked into using their gateway. Presumably this is to ensure they get their cut from in-game purchases - I wonder if Arx is a response by F D to that?

You didn't read my original post. Steam was down and I, and many others, were not able to login and play.

That has nothing to do with what happened.

No, again, you didn't read my original issue. I agree, I think it sucks that Steam purchase is "no CD-key" and doesn't show up on my Frontier digital purchases. Oh, but my ARX purchases do. Honestly, if I'd known this, I may have just bought it from Frontier directly. I feel a bit cheated that way.

There is no beginning, nor any end to Elite.

Your status and ships are mere cosmetics. It is possible, and even enjoyable, to play from scratch with a new account. It is still possible to 'win' and have fun.

I was not commenting on your original issue - although I was sympathetic in my final section.

I specifically quoted the part of your post on which I was commenting. You said "...The launcher that comes steam seems to have 2 modes. TL/DR - I was not referring to your original complaint.
