Using SteamVR with a USB tethered Android phone - how to actually show it in 3D?

So I followed these instructions and have managed to get ED to display via SteamVR on my Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra mounted in a headset holder.

My only problem is that even when I go into the game proper, it just shows as a virtual flat screen. I have looked in the Graphics options, and I believe that there supposed to be an option in the "3D" drop-down menu for an HMD, but there's nothing, just "Off", "Anaglyph", and "Side by Side".

Does anyone know how I might be able to get the proper 3D experience? How can I get ED to recognise my connected phone as a VR device? What am I missing?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I maybe wrong about this but it's been my experiance that every time I seen that it was because I didn't have the Oculus Or Steam VR software running to tell the gamne I want VR.

The SteamVR software was definitely running at the time I was trying to get it running

I've raised my OP query in a dedicated VR forum, and they've suggested that I launch the game from within the menu visible in the headset. My current problem is that said menu is completely blank aside from asking me "press Y on your controller to begin", yet I don't have a controller. I have a mouse, keyboard, and HOSAS, but no controller. I should be able to borrow one from a friend after work, so I will try that and report here what happens, for the benefit of anyone who comes looking in this thread for help.

OK, so I've managed to borrow from a friend in order to get past the silly "you must have a controller to use the menu" nonsense that SteamVR has going on. Now I've launched Elite Dangerous from there, and after a brief showing of a "coming next" window... nothing. Steam is saying that the game is "launching", but I've been sat here in this starry void for at least five minutes and nothing is happening.

Tested things out by launching Universe Sandbox and then Space Engine from the VR menu, which worked. Then I tried Elite Dangerous again, and this time it launched properly!

Only issue now is that text is way too small to read properly. Will try and fiddle with the setting to see if I can get things clearer.
