Using the galactic and system map while in VR

Hi,

I love this game in VR (using the oculus), but i hate navigating the star maps , just doesn't work as well as the non vr 2d method
That got me thinking , where can i ask the frontier devs, if we can have a normal 2d view (not vr enhanced) option for using the star charting whilst in VR - best of both worlds 🙂

I have a x52 pro, though I had to disable its mouse as its faulty, I'll try the Xbox controller that came with the oculus

with my x52 bound properly I can plot 1000ly in seconds. there really is a "magic binding" for a hotas that lets you navigate intuitively and easily.

Checked again but can not find how i set select system i am looking at, now you have to move mouse and head back and forward then a winodw come up and you site as still as you can and try to move mouse to it so you can select, if you manage that then turn your head to read info 9/10 times it lose what was selected.

Every week a thread comes up with this topic. Seriously, you should use the search function more.

Anyways, look at this:

Check the video in that post by Malic about how to work with the galaxy map in VR with HOTAS:

It's quite old but still valid.

And to repeat the often mentioned rule no. 1 for using the Galaxy Map in VR: DON'T USE THE MOUSE! AT ALL! It's useless for selecting stuff in a 3D environment! Move the mouse cursor out of sight and use your Joystick / HOTAS / Gamepad with the circular marker to select things as shown in the linked video.

Or invest in a HOTAS setup, works a treat

This, in my opinion, is the best suggestion. I dont like switching controllers when in VR and a HOTAS setup really works well. I use the stick for pitch and yaw and two hats for plane navigation, zooming and up and down in addition with the regular menu nav buttons (also all on the stick).

I have already used this setup in non-VR with an X-55 Rhino and now with a Thrustmaster Warthog and the Rift. Besides some limitations by the game, it works like a charm.

I made a video about the principles of using the galaxy map with VR, and a pad or flightstick setup. I didn't give my exact setup but I gave some tips about setting it up. For the flightstick, you need to set a hold-button to keep held while you do certain movements, so they can default back to manipulating the menu banner when you let go. It's all in the vid.

Sorry for the terrible quality, was way back in my youtube career, but is just about watchable :)

I try to bind galaxy map controls similar to how I pilot my ship. Yaw is rotate, pitch is pitch, roll is sideways movement, zoom is throttle, thruster hat is forward, back and also sideways, the two extra
firebuttons on x52 stick is move plane up/down. Fire is select.

The best way is to be able to rotate the map along the vertical axis.

Get a cheap gamepad and bind the controls to that. You need to be able to see and be able to select the position of the star on the galactic plane, rather than the star itself.

Have no problem with rotating or so my problem is to select the system. I stand so i look at it but no mater what i do i cant select it, go in go out nothing helps. Would be great if they did add so i cod use controller to htc vive for maps.

The galaxy map is frustrating with the xbox controller. I could not find a way to bind anything to be able to select the popup menu that comes up after you select a system (the menu where you select route, etc.). I have to reach out and find my mouse and use it to make the selection for me. A bit awkward but it works.

Just press the right navigation key (most likely DPad-Right) a couple of times and you'll be on it!
