Using the Rift

I bought my Rift about 6 months ago and tried it several times for the game, but didn't enjoy it at all for the following reasons:

The contacts, target modules and nav panels were too far back. I had to look back over my shoulder to see it, which hurt my neck and took too much time in combat arenas.
I couldn't navigate using the galaxy map.
I couldn't type place names with the keyboard because I couldn't see it and I can't touch-type
The resolution wasn't good compared with a 4k monitor. That one isn't a deal breaker - just another nail in the coffin.

Has anything changed with the last couple of updates that solve any of those problems?

nope not as far as i know its pretty much the same.

that said, the galaxy map is possibly a settings issue your end.

if you have access to any form of control pad or hotas - which given you presumably have an xbox pad you do! its very easy to use the galmap in vr imo and always has been.

even if you do not want to play the game using said pad, its still possible to set up just for the map

can you not look through the nose piece and see your KB? it is how i use it to do out of vr stuff

Sounds like you need to map a button or key to reset your HMDs position. This should then place the camera in the correct position so you don't need to look back so far.

Turning off the 'look to activate' option for those panels may also help, then bind each pannel to one of your HATS - presuming you have enough free, or create a combo key press for them - i.e a button being held in while you use the HAT.

I couldn't navigate using the galaxy map.

You need to bind the Galmap settings to your HOTAS or the XBONE pad which came with your Rift. There are plenty of posts here detailing how to do this.

Here is one such post:

There is currently no onscreen keyboard in Elite so your options are:

1. Look down the nose gap at your keyboard (backlit ones help)
2. Configure VoiceAttack to type what you speak
3. Learn to touch type (anyone who can - couldn't to begin with). You'll learn it faster as you can't see the keyboard.

VR will not be comparable with 4K gaming for a long, long time to come. Your PC (or anyone elses) would not run Elite at 4K in VR anyway. If you have a powerful GPU you may find that the games super sampling options help with image clarity.

Nope.
