USS has 2x police Viper and 1x Wanted guy. I kill wanted and police shoot me?

Well title says it all...

I'm not wanted in the system.
I'm on a federation mission where I have to kill 4 pirates.
So I warp to USS, drop out of warp and see 3 ships.
1 of them is wanted, I shoot him, but the 2 police get aggro and try to kill me.
I dont shoot back at the police so I dont get wanted status but it still puzzles me why police shoot at me for shooting a wanted criminal.

Anyone can explain?

maybe they were in the middle of accepting a bribe?

The reason is that they are faction-allied to the ship you shot. Presently that is the more important factor in determining aggression by the security ships.

However, you no longer gain a wanted flag, or lose any reputation. FD did say somewhere it's something they are aware of, but it's not a quick fix to resolve.

Did you use the warrant scanner? As although hes wanted it might not have been in the system you were currently in thus you committed murder.

Using a warrent scanner let's the Feds know your ok to kill him in their turf although hes free and clear in their system.

Using a warrant scanner though doesn't change the Wanted/Clean status in the ship's scan. You can only see that the pilot has bounties issued for him in other systems but he still shows as clean. In the type of USS the OP describes, there's usually at least a ship that is Wanted in that particular system and the feds are there to fight him.

This hasnt happened to me yet having downed quite a few wanteds with feds around, the only time i get unstuck is when a stray round or six pops em in the chuff because of my trigger happyness :)

Ok this seems a good answer.

To others:
Yes I used WS but as others say it doesnt change wanted status.

Yes but using a warrant scanner DOES prevent the police from considering your action of firing first on a "Wanted" target as assault.

I notice that if I scan first police never fires on me, however if I don't do that sometimes they might.

Really? I tried a few times to fire on people who were clean on that system but had a bounty elsewhere and I got fined immediately for assault, and then got fined for murder. Police kept shooting me. Maybe it's just a bug then on my part.

Yeah from my experience it does.

I remember shooting without scanning first the police was on me like bees on honey sometimes, but now I scan every time the police never bother me.

well that's weird, I just tried it 2 times, in a federation and an independent democracy system, with ships that were not affilliated with any faction in those systems, that both were clean in that system but had bounties elsewhere as shown by the KWS. Firing a shot fined me 400 cr immediately.

You sir are confusing multiple things here.
KWS does not "reveal" wanted status. If a target is wanted in current system, regular scan will reveal it.
If you don't perform a regular scan on a target that you know is a pirate, you will get wanted status.

I would like to see any evidence that scanning with (or without) KWS will make police attack one of their Wanted fellows.
Kitiara explained the reason for police behavior and there is no other reason.
