USS Help

Hi cmdr's,

I'm looking for USS's. Keep in mind I've been playing the game for a while. I see a uss in the info. Try for a second or two to locate it in front of me if not I jump to the target screen and nothing. Sometimes it's there but the last 5 time's it hasen't been. So I turn around and try to reenact the crime. Rarely do I find it again. It's frustrating when your looking for a specific mat and you might be flying right by it. Any tricks ? Am I missing something ? o7

Navigation screen, and you may or may not be correct...

USS will show in the Navigation panel, while they are in range. I'm not 100% sure what that range is, but I do know it's not terribly large.
Your Super Cruise speed is something to watch when USS hunting - typically when I see that Signal Source message in the top right I cut to 0% throttle and then look for it. Many times it's somewhere in front of me, but there are times when they appear off to one side or another, or +/- pitch, or even behind me, which makes them extremely easy to miss, but by cutting to 0% throttle (30 km/s), I haven't missed one in ages.

If you are in SuperCruise and moving too fast you will not find the USS by the time you slow sufficiently, try to keep the throttle indicator in the middle of the blue zone if you're on the look-out for them. If you are just trying to get somewhere fast, USS are a distraction designed to slow you down, ignore them.

Conversely, if you stop too quickly when you get the USS message, the USS may not appear and will not display in the left HUD nav section.

So try to hit that happy median, it takes a little practice.

If you get the USS message, slow down and access the left HUD nav panel and highlight the USS message there and lock in. The actual USS may not be readily seen through the cockpit, but highlighting it will allow you to find it through your cockpit displays.

Sorry I look at the Navigation tab in the Target Panel. I've tried the no throttle approach as soon as I see it. The USS fades away. Either I've coasted just past my ability to sense it or ? It made me wonder if you can only sense them when your moving fast ( although I know that's not the case). Thanks again for the advice. I'm putting on my suit and standing in the roof. o7

I'll try the middle of the blue thing. Thanks

Also I'm in a Cutter. I know it's bad on city streets. Maybe it's bad on the freeway ?

1 for 1 with the blue thing.
2 for 2 keeping my throttle in the blue area. Maybe your on to something rrobes?
3 or 3 and a High Grade
9 for 10

P.S. If the god's of ED could through some proto light alloys my way ?

Thanks again. I think rrobes was right. In essense I was traveling too fast. I put the throttle in the middle of the blue section. After a while I moved it just below mid range blue and I am locating them all. If I don't see them I now have enough time to locate them in the navigation tab. I wonder if it's different related to ship and speed? THANKS AGAIN COMMUNITY ! fly dangerous

I'm not sure whether there have been any changes in 2.4 but this is how USS's worked for a very long time:
1. USS always appears in a cone in front of your ship, at a distance of roughly 20 seconds travel at your current speed.
2. Each USS stays active for some time (I think it's around 20 seconds). If you don't target the USS during that time it vanishes, regardless of distance.

This means that most of the time you can see the USS in front of you when it appears and if you don't see it it's usually hidden by your ship's dashboard. In that case it's best to slow down and either pitch down or look in your nav panel and select the USS from there. It is always visible in your nav panel but based on where you are the USS can be assigned to the main star or some planet so it can take some scrolling to find it.

If you're travelling at really high C the message can popup before the signal source appears. in that case you just have to go forward a bit.
