Oh, Seven....

Even though I own a Fleet Carrier or two, I'm still not sure that carriers deserve the credit for reviving the game. There are too many other things which also happened which deserve some credit. I think that Frontier showing the community some attention after reflecting them is the main over all reason. That includes Fleet Carriers, but it also includes the return of GalNet, CGs, communication, etc.

I bought my carrier ages ago, but i haven't found any use for it yet. Can somebody give me some ideas? I haven't found a single guide that gives any detail. I've seen a few that tell you what they can do, but none that tell you how or why.

Well done to down to Earth Astronomy for arranging the tourist trip on his. Does that get noobs the 5000ly to unlock Professor Palin? If it does, some have missed the chance, though there's not much you can do for three days other than flying around and looking at the view for one day. Still, it'd be a good way to get it if you're busy.

I use mine as a mobile base, so I can switch between different activities at a moment's notice. All my ready-to-use ships are based on board the carrier (minus a few item storages and mothballed ships in Shinrarta). Before I owned my FC, I would waste hours flying from A over B and C to D just to fetch a ship or new modules for a different activity (e.g. If I had been mining for a bit in my Cutter and decided to do some AX combat, I would need to fly my Cutter to Shinrarta, get into a long range ship, then fly to either Pleiades or Witch Head to get my AX ship...and then I'd probably be bored already and turn Elite off for the evening). Today, I simply plot one jump for my Carrier and get going.

The FC also changed the way I explore in Elite. I jump my carrier a couple of jumps into "deep" space and then use ships I wouldn't normally use for exploration. I can also switch between different ships while out exploring, to change the pace and "feel" a bit. One day I take my AspX, the next a Keelback and the next day a Beluga Liner. Just because I can. The UC service also lets me hand in exploration data right away, so I can actually see my name on the stellar bodies I've discovered. In combination with the Redemption Office to hand in Codex entries, the FC made me take greater risks (e.g. exploring High-G worlds) without the fear of losing weeks or even months of work. Every once in a while I would also mine Tritium in my mining Python. Again, not necessarily because I must, but it keeps things fresh and entertaining for me.

I wouldn't go as far a saying they saved the game, but IMO they sure did rejuvenated it a fair bit, by allowing me to approach the game in several different new ways, and make use of in game stuff, both ships and modules, that I rarely (or never) touched before. So to me FCs were hands down one of the best additions the game has had so far.

There's exploration of course, plus the ability to move specialist combat ships about instead of doing the cold war prepositioned weapons thing. There's long range mining and Colonia taxis. A few others.

Same. It completely transformed exploration for me. Now I finally go out into deep space like a Captain Kirk, in a large science vessel advancing sdlowly while deploying small shuttles and ships to explore the surroundings.

I use tiny shuttles to deloy SRVs on planets, a Hauler and an Adder, a Cobra III to explore the surrounding area around the FC, and a Python to pickup cargo from planets (stuff like meta alloys), with extra fuel tanks instead of scoop to give that "running low on fuel, time to get back" feeling. Also carry a couple small fighters for flavor and occasional fun flying (Imp Eagle and Imp Courier) and checking out stellar phenomena.
Got rid of most of my large ships, except a T-9 refuelling barge and a T-10 Miner which I use every time I encounter a worthy mineral hotspot in a scenic location. Also carry around 2 dedicated exploration ships, a DBX to get somewhere fast, and a T-7 with every piece of exploration gear in existence, to venture far from the FC is I need to.

The exploration trip I made shortly after FCs were released (and after redesigning my ships to be FC-centered) was the best weeks of ED gameplay I ever had so far. Looking very forward to going out again after Odyssey releases and more planets (and more stuff on those planets) are available. :)

I reckon the free giveaway of the game on Epic contributed significantly more TBH...
