USS question

OK, folks, I am a fairly decent explorer, but I have never gotten into certain aspects of the game like USS interactions.

I am on my way back to "civilization" and encountered an USS in Byeia Euq CT-V b30-2. That's around 5.5 kLY from the bubble.

I am running on 45% hull right now, so I didn't take it up; my question is, how common is it to find something like that?

It is not uncommon. Often a USS that far out will have a canister of data.

These days, of course, if you target a USS, you will get told a bit about the contents before 'dropping in'. In particular, it will give you a threat level. If out in the black, I would not dream of investigating any USS that had a threat other than zero.

Closer than around 1,000 Ly (a rough number I don't know the exact range) You can get Degraded Emissions and Encoded Emissions USSs and they are usually threat 0. They often have materials (the chemical manipulators for G5 FSD engineer upgrades maybe inside the encoded Emissions USSs. Lower grades may be in Degraded emissions. After a certain range the only USS you get, are Degraded Emissions and they either have a small data cache or a large data cache. I usually explore without cargo so I leave them alone. If you target the USS it will scan and tell you the threat.
